Advice wanted for prospective Thames boater.A chum is looking around for his first boat and living in Milton Keynes, would prefer to keep his new(to him)boat not more than an hour or so from home.
Boat will prob be in the 30-35ft range and have suggested that the area twixt Teddington and Henley would be as good a place as any to look for moorings as decent and varied selection available. He really fancies himself at Harleyford but his tightwadness ses otherwise. So any suggestions for economical berthing in the area praps at one of the smaller less posh boatyards.

From Milton Keynes he can get anywhere on the Thames. The higher up the easier the journey so he'd be better off looking from Henley up rather than down.. Marina mooring fees are roughly in line where ever you go. He could however try for a Lock mooring with the EA. Boatyard moorings tend to be cheaper too but there ain't too many of these.

Thanks Byron. Will be seeing him at weekend.Think he has got his eye on an early Princess prob a 37 from his description. He came to see us at St Kats and again at Hampton Court when we came round last summer. We were heading your way with Boatone but had to turn back at Sonning ?,however before we set off downriver we had a cracking meal at a rather nice hotel set right on the riverbank.

There is/was? a yard/chandlery just below Caversham lock. Don't know whether it's still open.

Try Fry's Island in Reading

Tilehurst; there's a yard/chandlery at the end of Scour's Lane.

The Shillingford Bridge hotel has private moorings; you might strike lucky and get in there.

The boatyard just downstream of Caversham is "Better Boating Co" - in the phone book and he does have some moorings - especially on the island (to which you have to row) and that's reflected in the price. Apart from Thames and Kennet Marina - just a bit further down and opposite the gas holders - marina moorings are in short supply and expensive.

However, if he is unwilling so spend loads o' money there are end of garden type moorings and small cruising clubs which are less expensive; but they have to be sought out 'cos they don't advertise.

If he is adventurous it might be worth considering looking for moorings on the Upper Thames; he'd be restricted to the stretch above Osney bridge (too low for a big boat), but moving it after a year (use boatyards with cranes at either side of Oxford, plus a lorry for a day) might be economically feasible....)

If he joins a yacht club around the Twickenham area the moorings are very cheap and only 10 mins from the non tidal part . Twickenham is controlled by Richmond lock so not fully tidal untill Richmond decides it needs to be . I think .

Is Saxon Moorings actually called 'RaceCourse Marina'? Or is this a different one all together? Am just looking at reviews and this one does not have the best so wondering if it is saxons or not.

No not the same, Saxon moorings are downstream of Windsor near Runneymede, there is a very narrow entrance and foot bridge to go under so its only suitable for small boats <25ft with a very low air draft.

Thanks very much for that Chris, Looking at Google Maps now and can see this site. Looks like Saxons would be the best bet for me. :)
