No regrets switching to 68 over:

I would like to bag a small handheld VHF for Upper Thames use.

They only cost £30-50 for basic ones...(Non DSC)

I understand one requires a licence, and the appropriate qualification, but what is the reality of this?

Do most users have the ship licence and qualification, or do they just use the radio appropriately and never get detected?

I have no issue with either the licence or qualification by the way, but getting a day off to do it is soooo hard, so I bought a couple of very comprehensive books on the subject (RYA one plus the exam question book) with a view to at least learning what I need to know to use the thing properly and pertinently.

I thought there may be a chance I would use one on occasion before I do the official course /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Or is this a big no-no

Thank you!

No Regrets out. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The reality is that "one requires a licence, and the appropriate qualification" - and I am not being flippant.

Would you get caught/prosecuted if you did not comply? Some might say its unlikely but theres always a risk.........

Incidentally, FWIW I certainly wouldnt waste my money on a £30-£50 cheapo handset.

I expect there are a number of people using VHFs without the appropriate paperwork and would think they'd likely get away with it on the Upper Thames, not entirely sure what the penalty is if you get caught though.

Got all my paperwork sorted out a few years back and it really is an easy test, so long as you can find the time to do it.

Guess its your choice in the end,

Darren.

I shall take your esteemed advice as always.

Now, how do I make contact about mooring at the TVR.

Anybody got a CB radio? I have one /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A cheap Icom is only about £90. Probably worth paying up for a good brand.

On this point, how commonly is the VHF used above Teddington? I have one (and a licence /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) but assumed it was monitored very little on the non-tidal river.

Perhaps Brayman (as an organiser) might want to PM you his contact details, most of us licensed operators just call the rally / club marshal on the VHF as we approach.

Don't think its officially monitored at all up there but most of the clubs use VHF to stay in contact with members when travelling to events.

I think I gave you my mobile number, we will be listening out on VHF Ch 10. The visitor's mooring is at the downstream end of the Rally site next to Bray Cruiser Club, level with Temple Island. Depending how many Bray boats there are you may get lucky and find a Birchwood 25 to moor alongside!

Full throttle and eyes closed usually works for me! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have the phone numbers, thanks to everyone who helped.

Sorry to fuss about this, I'm sure all I need to do is arrive and raft up to a cheaper boat than mine (Might be hard though) but it's our very first rally! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Absolutely can't wait to meet you all though /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Now where would you find a Birchwood 25 that is also a Bray Cruiser Club boat......?

Well it does depend what our club steward has in mind, but I thought it might keep you both occupied for a few hours! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
