can anyone give me advice on making a passage from teddington, down to st katts? my boat draws abt 1 metre, and is capable of punching the tide at up to
15 kts, rowers and speed limits permitting....! what is a realistic passage time from
teddington and richmond to st. katts? and how early before high water will i be
able to pass thru richmond...without getting stuck?

Give me an email address for you and I'll send over my spred sheet of lock times etc It's based on getting to Richmond ahead of HW london bridge which is about +1 hr for Richmond.

The lock exit - the water is quite shallow at LW so great care in needed, go on a neap tide you should have more water.

Transit time is about 2 hrs I think so you should get to St Kats with about 30mins to spare on there last lock in time before the water drops away again, if you miss it there are a coupl eof bolt holes further down with much wider in - out times either side of HW.

Hope thta helps

Peter

PS where are you based ?

The Teddington Lock Keeper will advise you if it isn't safe to transit the shallows. I use my own rule of thumb. I look over the barrier at the big barge located below the barrier on the left. If the water has reached the base of the barge there's at least a fathom of water anywhere. Transit time 2 -2½ hours if you don't wish to upset (A) The Rowers (B) The dudes who live in the Houseboats at Chelsea.

I'm not a St Kat's lover But that life everybody to their own.

I usually try to get either a very early tide or an evening one for the trip down stream. If going to St. kats the leaving time depends on a spring or neap tide. On neaps you can lock through about an hour before the barrier lifts. With a bit of care and an echo sounder you should have no problem through Syon reach. I used to take a trip boat up there and we drew about 4'6" so don't panic, softly softly will get you through. This should give you a chance at the early lock into the marina. Going V early in the morning or early evening will get rid of most of the rowers. Check with the marina for locking times. Spring tides wait until the barrier lifts and you'll get the later lock at the marina.
Watch your wash on the trip, PLA have nothing better to do than harras the public. Take a camera to identify the rowers that you will fall foul of. Don't argue with them. Photograph for identification and make notes for your complaint letter to the PLA, the ARA. The ATYC and the EA.
Try to pace yourself to arrive just before your locking in time, You should book this in advance they will book you into the lock according to the traffic movements. There is no safe mooring outside the dock and you will get bounced to hell by the trip boats if you tie up to the bouy's or the pontoons.
If you're going further down stream leave 2 hours before the tide at Teddington. Arrive at the pool of Londor on the slack and get the tidal push all the way down to Sea Reach.

Good luck
