Thames Clubs

My re-born love for my place of birth continues unabated....and I am considering options for getting onto the Thames.
With a friend on here, I am reflecting on sailing from lets say Teddington or Richmond to Tower Bridge or central London anyhow, now and again, once a month or whatever.

My original thinking was sail, however I am keen to 'get involved' in a club and have found it rather difficult to find in my target area (as high as Hampton Court, down to the City) via the web, any that are just for pleasure sailors.

Most it would seem are for motor boats, presumably because of the bridges or for racing yacht clubs, which is a touch too extreme for me.

Am I better to be thinking of a cabin cruiser moored somewhere through a club and a third boat, a sailing dinghy towed from home?
(my first boat is a Yacht moored in Weymouth)

I would enjoy a weekend with friends cruising up and down the Thames once in a while, as well as getting wet in a dinghy too.

Any one have some thoughts on clubs or should I not bother?
Like the idea of the Thames Yacht Club, alas I wouldn't get through all the membership hoops!

I'm a bit confused about what exactly you want to do.
It's years since I lived in Putney, but I don't recall much sailing down the river - mainly to bridges getting in the way.

There used to be an annual Putney to Tower Bridge dinghy race, but that was marshalled, happened at around low water and the boats were towed back.

Could be wrong in today's circumstances...

Hurlingham Yacht club caters for dinghies and mobos.

Ranelagh SC (or is it YC) does dinghies only.

There are more clubs on the non tidal bit (more gaps between the bridges) but they are out of your specified zone.




Should be enough to get the discussion going (and I'm happy to be corrected).

I want to have a boat for entertaining on, and a small sail dinghy, both on the Thames.
The dinghy can be stored at home in Sussex but the 'larks' boat moored somewhere safe (as much as can be expected)...and I thought it would be good to be a member of a club.
So, I'm guessing by the lack of replies the web search is adequate enough.

Look on the ATYC website for the list of member clubs. Pretty much all the ones that are likely to be of interest to you are listed with links to their own websites.

Very few actually have their own moorings though.

A little upstream from Hampton Court (through the lock) is Aquarius SC, they do have some boats alongside that have small cabins. Needs a mast in a tabernacle or a well thought through gunter rig to go very far.

They seem a friendly lot and oftem come on here or the Mobo forum.

You'll need earplug 'cos they are sandwiched between the District Line and Putney Bridge.
