Dear all,

We are a few months away from the Sea Scout Armada (see Here )

After departing Ramsgate on the 26th of July, the idea was to head for Queensborough on our way to London. Contrary to Ramsgate, which has agreed to welcome us with open arms, Queensborough was less available for cooperation. Not only will they charge us the full rate, offer no facilities, but they can't even guarantee us a spot. And it's not as if that place is known for its tourist atractions.

So alternatives need to be found. Obviously the Medway and Stangate creek come to mind, but what about the Leigh and Yantlett Small Ships Anchorages (N51°30', E000°40'). Are those real anchoring areas or just names of a bygone age. Anybody from the Leigh-on-Sea YCs here?

The 2 anchorages you mention are not really suitable for your purpose unless the weather is very settled.
I know all this area very well indeed, and really, as per your previous posts, in the circumstances your best bet is Stangate Creek.

How about the anchorage adjacent to the Harty Ferry, between Sheppey and Faversham? Or do you need to be closer in to the Thames?

Harty Ferry very uncomfortable in strong east or west winds.
He needs to be in Medway entrance area at LW for trip to London.

Will people please stop advertising Stangate Creek. It's a wretched place with dangerous navigation hazards and is best left for the locals who can find their way through the rip tides, overfalls and uncharted rocks.

Ooohhh gosh it is too. Stay away. Littered with wrecks as well of old vessels that couldn't get out again. Many ghosts too, bodies buried round there from the convict ships. And the mud stinks something rotten. Give me the Solent any day.

Yup! Not forgetting the island where the anthrax trials were conducted. Or the other one where the MoD forbid geiger counters in case people find out about .....

On a more serious note....

Well done to Ramsgate, and a big Boo Hiss to Queensborough...

At least this is a group of kids that are getting off their backsides, and doing something with their lives rather than exacerbating the unfortunate sterotype of their age group.....

exacerbating the unfortunate stereotype of their age group

[/ QUOTE ] I'm impressed, really impressed. This may be an internet forum, but it's a eloquent one.

As someone else has mentioned it might be worthwhile contacting one of the Thames Yacht clubs. There are clubs at Gravesend, Thurrock (not Grays), Erith and Greenwich. I would personally recommend Erith if you can get that far. let me know if you want any details.

Has anyone bothered to read the details of the vessels that are attending this rally - 30 to 50 with on that looks like an old sail driven X channel ferry /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Stangate is quite good but even it would be full with 50 boats anchored in it /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Outside of Ramsgate I'm not sure where you could get 50 visitors berths in one go.

Peter.

If its of any help here's Stangate

And this is Sharfleet

There are a couple of commercial buoys just inside the entrance to Stangate. As other's have said though, and I'm sure you can see, a dreadful place .

Another of Sharfleet

Yep, and the S/Y Zawisza Czarny will be joining us as well. You didn't think that we would arrive with Opies and Tinkerers, did you ? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi brave soul.

Yanlett creek is a nothing place with very little room and unsuitable.

The Leigh small ships anchorage (over which I look as I type) is used by ships and some yatch anchor whilst waiting the tide but it is very exposed and the the Thames 'chop' is not pleasant. The ordinary yachts could come into the Ray (Ray Gut) form the Leigh buoy near the pier. There's room and enough water (some shallow bits at LWS) and although it's still exposed to the elements the water will be much calmer than the edge of the main channel.

All this is the reason for moving my boat from the Thames to the Blackwater. Very limited.
