Thames AIS

Hello,

I run http://www.OrwellAIS.com that currently covers Felixstowe, Gibralte, Vancouver, Antwerp and Trondheim. I'd like to extend the coverage to cover the Thames I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping me out?

Martin
Hello Martin, I think you need to explain more fully what sort of help you are requiring?

Do you need marine radio receiving stations scattered along the Thames linking into your set-up or are you looking for more finances?

Hello,

Ideally I'd like to find someone who would be willing to host an AIS receiver for me. I can supply the AIS reciever and simple antenna but it would need to be plugged into a PC that is connected to the internet and left on.

The site would need to have a good view over London.

The complete answer would be for the Environment Agency to host the equipment at the Woolwich Barrier. BUT! have the EA the common sense to see what a great Public Relations Coup this would be?

Martin,
The Hurlingham yacht club might be a possibility, will speak to some committee members, including the Commodore. If you want me to, pm me. Hurlingham yacht club is in Putney on the tidal Thames. I see only one problem, radio connections to equipment might be impeded by buildings on the banks.

AIS - River Thames

Putney is probably a little too far upstream as the AIS ships cannot really get past London Bridge.

I have a radio colleague whom I have worked with and known for many years (Ex D-Tels & Home Office). He has radio engineering premises just north of the Blackwall Tunnel (north bank). I will have a word with him and see if he is willling? ;)

No promises.

Might be worth having a chat with ybw, the hosts of this forum. I'll send a pm to Dan and Richard to have a look at this thread. Their offices are very near the Thames on South Bank, so won't cover the whole Thames, but would cover the central London area. As Byron says, something liike the Thames barrier would also be an option.
