Testing Autopilot Wheel Drive

Hello,

Trying to troubleshoot a 6 year old raymarine wheel pilot for a buddy, not even sure of the model.

To test a wheel drive motor for rotation would it be safe enough to touch the drive wires off a 12v battery then reversing wires so as to test port and starboard movement?

It is probably an ST4000 or similar. I can't see a problem in what you suggest, but perhaps a 5 amp fuse inline on the positive is a good idea.

You can get the manual on line from Raymarine. Connect it up and follow the test, which is very simple. Press the +10 and it should turn to starboard, then press -10 and it goes back. If it goes the wrong way, reverse the wires from the course computer if it is an SPX or the control head if an ST 4000, to the drive motor.
