Our new (to us) Bene has an omni directional masthead TV aerial. There is also a 12v aerial amplifier in the line. I was onboard with the kids this week and couldn't get any signal at all at either of two locations (Ipswich wet dock and Harwich).

Does anyone know if its possible to test these things - without going to the masthead that is? e.g. if I connected an ohmeter at the set end of the lead (before the amp of course) what should it show?

My brother in law boat an all singing all dancing TV reception ariel, also a bosuns chair to go up the mast to put it on. 'kin useless, so he spent £60 on a digi box thingy with a portable satelite dish that he attaches to the granny bars and he now gets up to 4000 channels (though it always seems to be tuned in to those special Dutch channels) and runs air traffic control.

I think he said he bought it in argos.

I would suggest firstly that you confirm you have a 12v supply to the amplifier. This is often fed up the coaxial cable to the amplifier in the antenna.but may be a separate supply wire.
Disconnect the cable at the bottom and check for 12v with the meter. If none try to sort out where it is supposed to come from. Usually the TV power supply.
If the amplifier is a separate box then it can be bypassed and you should get some signal that is improved if the ampo is connected in and working. good luck olewiill
