Whats the correct sound signal for

"get out the way you daft old sod " ?

You spend all week preparing for a weekend away, change fuel/air filters and plan tides etc, cast off on time and at the final hurdle some daft old fart decides he is going to block the channel by sailing at 0.5 to 1.1 knts

Concious that you are going to miss a cil/run out of water and go aground there must be some sort of sound signal that relays the message across that you want to pass ?

(channel too narrow to turn round and go back, falling tide and dries both sides).
Green arrow shows green marker hidden by his rigging, even he cant see where he is going !

Doesn't matter what sound signal you use as he won't be able to hear it over your generator, noisy exhausts & music system :D

I don't know all the facts but I think you are not the give way vessel becuase of rule 9b. He is required not to impede you, and you may press on and overtake. And apply 9e to tell him what you're doing.

What if the other vessel is also restricted to said channel .... ?
Then in addition - what if his motor is duff and sailing is his only way through? (ok - Daka could chuck him a line on the way past!)

He cut in-front of me from outside the channel .

I deduce that he turned his engines off and used his momentum to steer into the channel.

As he almost stopped in front of me he then hoisted his main sail first and then the foresail , all single handed.

I cant possibly attempt to answer all scenarios and you posed a question to jfm but just for clarity if I had managed to get passed him I wasnt in the mood for chucking a line as I pass , more likely a bucket full of something ;)

Well done to benjenbav, csail and prv for correctly identifying the correct sound signal Beeeeeeeeeeeeep Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep Beep :)

Although in this situation chances are he wasnt as knowledgeable as you or jfm and the ever popular BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP may have produced better results :D

Hmm - could be that his engine CUT OUT as he skimmed across the mudbank - because he'd picked up some crud in the cooling water inlet - or picked up a stray mooring warp around the prop that stopped the engine.

Being a proper sailor he calmly raised the sails and continued his passage ...

Deduce all you like - doesn't mean you're right! :p

You could be right and it had crossed my mind too as he raised the main sail however when he continued to raise the foresail too I realized he was just a twasock.
For what it is worth I dont recall complaining at his actions.

I just used it as an example to indicate to others the value of knowledge of colregs and sound signals :)

My previous experience and knowledge set me in good stead as I was able to deduce from the type of boat and manor in which it was being handled that the skipper was a complete twasock to be afforded a wide berth.:p

You mean he didn't spot you behind him? I am sure if he had he would have politely signalled you by as a well mannered sailor would do. Otherwise a gentle 10 second blast is needed just to attract his attention :) BTW DAKA how do you do 1kn and maintain any direction? On mine its a right pain.

Or you could get sensible boat parked in a sensible location, that does not encourage steam coming out of your ears every time some lesser mortal who obviously actually enjoys his boating dares to impede your passage ? :)

But if the sailing boat can safely navigate only within the channel or fairway then Daka being under 20 metres mustn't impede him under that rule either.
