Terrorist threat

I see that Blair is getting the country worked up about the terrorist threat for the elections.

He may be right, but I would suggest that he should consider taking a leaf out of Putin's book. Putin, you may recall, was largely elected after Yeltsin passed out of the picture, on a strong anti-terrorism ticket. In the month or two running up to his election, Moscow was shaken by a string of terrorist attacks that levelled several buildings with hundreds of people inside.

The fact that most of the evidence that came to light afterwards seemed to point to the Russian security services blowing up their own people, did not stop the wave of popular support for Putin's anti-Chechen policies.

After all, 9/11 did Bush no harm at all.

So perhaps Blair should be considering arranging a series of terrorist attacks on London?

Someone else not watched the triology The House of Cards that BBC TV did about 20 / 25 year ago. The story of how a MP took over the country by malipulating the media.
One part was to do with the terrorist threat, I think at electtion time ( IRA then ), bomb goes of by No 10, PM turns to his spin doctor and says ' that's not one of ours', the whole of New Labour is in those three series. The odd bit was that he engineered the split between Charles and the pre Di Princess of Wales, then later started a press campaign that when the Queen dies, she should be replaced by Charles son, recent press ???.

Wait and see.

I think that more recent history suggests that the opposite might happen. The train bombings in Madrid actually caused a change in government. The incumbent party who were pro the Iraq invasion was voted out in reaction to the terrorist attacks. It produced a huge swing in anti-war and anti-government feeling. The government also lost credibility as initally they blamed ETA and it soon become
obvious that they were not responsible.

I believe that there is a real threat to the UK in the run up to the general election and I can imagine that our railway network is under similar threat (Clapham Junction would be a high priority target).

It was interesting to see in the news, a week or so ago, that our government reported that the terrorist threat from the IRA had increased. Are they trying to soften us up?

Ah, but it was all in the timing. With Madrid, the bombing was just a couple of days before hand, and the government stupidly tried to blame ETA against all the evidence. Spaniards were understandably angry about this bungling.

What Blair needs is a bombing timed a week or two earlier and no attempt to blame it on anyone other than Al Qaeda (of course). Surely he has some friends who could rustle up something appropriate?

My office is in a hospital that treats the "bewildered". Its not catching though. I truly believe that Tony Blair should be PM for ever, that tax will not only go down but be spent wisely on things that matter to me and mine and that the tide of regulation will ebb. I can't go on now as a small turtle dressed as Napoleon is doing a fandango upon my medication.

I think that the IRA has more than enough on its plate at the minute trying to portray itself as a ligitimate peaceful political organisation and not a bunch of murderous thugs and criminals (via Sinn Fein of course) in the aftermath of the Northern Bank Robbery and the McCartney murder - the real threat appears to be more from the so called dissident republicans (CIRA/RIRA/etc) who have not gone away... todays Belfast Telegraph is warning of an increased threat on the mainland from these groups.
