Tenders?

As you know I am moored mid-stream at the moment and want to get my own tender. Can I mount davits on Miammi Vice II a 1973 Montego Bayliner? Can someone recomend a good tender to use, and are those electric air pumps as seen in Halfords any good?

DFL, I think you're best bet would be a 5m Avon Searider with a Seagull engine. Mr B and I have had lots of fun in ours

I don't think you'll find the Halfords type pumps much good. they are OK for pumping up relatively small volume tyres, but an inflatable would, I reckon, take over an hour.

Chandlers advertise fast pumps designed for the job, I've not tried one and they are about £50 I think.

I use a double acting manual device (from TOYS R US), and pump mine up in about 10 mins, and it's not too hard work.

Happy pumping!

Something that has raised my interest - what do you do with the tender while you are ashore in some strange harbour (seeking the pub). Are they often stolen / borrowed. Is there some ettique (can't spell) for where you leave it?

Borrowing an old aluminium thing from a friend at present, and rowing. Pauline, 5m sounds way too big - the boat is only 12 foot wide - it'd hang over at the ends.

I looked at the pumps in the chandlers, and they look very expensive for what they are, hence the question about the Halfords ones.

I have solved the mystery of the GPS now. It turns out it was an old one and according to Gramin in the US, the firmware did not survive the date change a ways back. So it's dead.

There's often a little pontoon. Protocol is not to occupy an obvious space for a bigger boat. The theft thing can be a problem. Avoid it by
1) tying boat on with round turn and fifty-three half hitches,
2) asking the outboard motor shop for a knackered looking spare cowl for you secretly brand new motor
3) keeping a policemans helmet in the dinghy at all times or painting (with decent paint and proper writing) Property of Hampshire Constabulary or suchlike on it, or a big metal sign in floor with Hazchem signs all over it, all get them worried.
4) lifting the cowl and disconnecting a HT lead from spark plug

nice old aluminium thing sounds ok, and reserves your mooring too. Do you need a tender that much in solent? We used to play beach hockey off sandtown in summer, and much about in yarmouth, otherwise no need really? Much cheaper to use watertaxis everywhere.

Agree with Matt.

I've only got a little boat, as Matt says we use water taxis in places like Cowes & Yarmouth. For the odd ocassion we need to get ashore (stop at Colwell Bay IOW a lot) I've got a beach type dinghy bought from a toy shop in Swanage. Hence Toys R Us pump. My Halfords compressor completely useless, for this task.

Blow it up in about 5 mins when needed, let it down and store in a lockers when finished. I think it cost about 20 quid. It does us, but you'd need something a bit more substantial to get to your mooring, with gear etc.

That's right, I think that was your point.

Um........It's only the little dinghy thing I pump up each time. Oops perhaps I've missed a bit of humour here!!

Right now I think I do. I thought I had a proper marina berth, but I think it may have fallen through. I'm borrowing a swinging mmoring at present, but I may have to vacate that soon. I will need a tender to get me, the wife and the dog out along with all our gear.

If push comes to shove, can I just anchor in Chichester, anyone?

Depends, Matts,

with two small kids, there's an endless demand for us to 'go and play on the beach'. Oh, and they now want to drive the thing, more so since I put the 8hp on and it goes like a scalded cat...

Re: Mooring

Have you looked at Birdham Pool? You're more restricted by the tides, and it's not as "upmarket" and well maintained as Chichester, but you need showers and shops when you go somewhere else, not when it's your own berth-place.

Re: Lettem drive!

I do, but lots of dads seem very wary of daft sone ever being allowed to drive. Evenbtually 18-yearold son lets rip in car and smashes up, I imagine.

Whereas, mine very responsible, and sensible. Well, more sensible than er me. The yam is a good machine to learn throttles and separate fw/reverse, saftey procedures with kill-cord and so on, and they can "be skipper" checking everything.

Suggest only allowed out alone (within reasonable visual range) IF they can row a bit AND start the motor on their own AND swim. if can't start motor, oars only.

How old are they?

Re: Lettem drive!

Quite agree. 6 and 8 next season. Allowed to row in the marina, or motor with dad on board at present. Far better to start em young. Will be teaching 6 yr old to handle shotgun next year, too (not on boat b4 u ask)

I use a high volume air inflator, chandlers like you say charge £50-80 for a large looking thing. I purchased one from a car access shop (Camberley Auto Factors) for £8.00, also got one for a friend which I found in a camping shop for £10.00.

It inflates my tender with in 3-4 mins and also deflates in around the same time and is very small about the size of a hand.
