Having taken the GRP cover off my Water Tank and then spent ages picking the silicone sealant away, I'm about to replace the cover. But instead of squirting silicone round the gap, is there a "temporay" material, perhaps foam or rubber that will be just as good and will allow me to open the tank up whenever I need to (mainly for cleaning) without the pain.

Try a piece of the cushioned vinyl floor covering, cut to shape. You will probably pick up an off cut for free from a carpet fitter.

We used a piece as a waterproof gasket when bolting a small mast to the wheelhouse roof. The mast needed to be easily removed when passing low bridges on the French canals. In fifteen years, no water seeped under the mast or gasket.

Good luck

Go to a GOOD engine rebuilders. They'll do various sheets of stuff for cutting gaskets. Or you could try the classic car mags. Failing that, go buy a cork floor tile and cut one from that. They use cork in wine bottles so why not on a water tank!

You really need to use either solid or foam silicone rubber [white] as its a 'food grade' material and won't taint the water, also it'll be easy to remove / refit the inspection hatch at any time in the future. If you need to locate some send me a P.M. - I'm in the trade.
