Hello All,

Looking for some guidance, as I find myself in a small town on the Australian coast, in a 26 foot grp boat, with an 8hp single cylinder Yanmar with four broken engine mounts. I have 280 miles to go until home port.

The broken mounts caused the prop shaft to snap, and I have had a new shaft machined which is in the boat. The alignment that I can achieve does not allow enough room for new yanmar mounts, and those which were removed were non standard "rubber donut" under a steel cup welded to the engine bearer (14 inch lon flat steel bar screwed to th engine bed. To get a reasonable alignment I have chocked up each mount with hard wood blocks, and the measurements suggest that the only option is a custom mount (usually for a genset) which can be delivered in a couple of weeks.

My thoughts are to " hard" bolt the engine to the bed, using the Wooden blocks as mounts. I was thinking of inverting an m12 bolt in each stack of chocks, glueing and screwing together, then bolting the assembly to the steel bearers.
There is a flexible coupling on the gearbox/prop shaft.

Does this sound like a stupid idea? I would quite like to get home and the boat has been stuck for 2 weeks already sorting out the prop shaft.

Cheers,

Greyish Beard

The solution to Dylan Winter's engine mounting problems in his Mirror Offshore was to fabricate new ones from Landrover engine mountings.

I am sure you'll find all the details in his KTL videos

Often wonder though if they were a tad soft and if without a flexible coupling they may have been a contributing factor to the gearbox failure that drove him to favour outboard engines

If you can get a very good alignment then your method will work; as other had said, you can bolt the engine straight to the boat, the whole boat will shake a bit but if the alignment is good, you should have no problem.
