I'm planning to take the boat to the west country for a fortnight in at the end of July / start of August but in order to maximise family time there I had planned to sail the boat to somewhere like Brixham the weekend before. Then leave it for the week before returning the next weekend to start the fortnight proper. LIkewise in reverse the weekend following the fortnight's hols. Any tips on a raeasonably cheap & secure place to berth the boat for the two weeks (one at each end) it will be unattended?

How about Exmouth?

We have 'layed up' in Exmouth for about 10 weeks since quitting The Solent.

Now summer is here we are continuing West in small bites.

We originally planned to lay up in the Turf Lock basin but we were unable to "overcome the powers of darkness" to quote Tom Cunliffe in the Shell Channel Pilot. We were forced to take a visitors buoy which was at a very popular price compared to other stop-overs.

If you ring Eddie on the water taxi on 07970 918418 he will tell you prices and availability.

Exmouth has slightly restricted access in so much as a strong tide to effectively prevent entry / exit againt the flow.

The estuary is pleasant enough, though lacks facilities.

If you are using your dinghy, fine, otherwise check the taxi times carefully.

Exmouth has an advantage if you are travelling far, that it is fairly close to the M5.

We're heading for Dartmouth or Salcome shortly. Any advice welcome, particularly on cheap holding berths for a 32' deep fin-keeler (Westerly Fulmar).

Re: How about Exmouth?

Yes there are a fair number of free berths in the Exe, there are two either side of me, but do not know if they've been serviced this year. Eddie is probably your best bet, as has already been suggested.
