temperature guage

Can anyone give me some advice - My temperature guage flickers violently as I increase the revs on my Perkins 40Hp engine. It is stable below 8000 revs but any higher and the flickering starts and it is difficult to check on engine temperature. How do I stop this?

My first guess would be a poor electrical contact somewhere between the sensor and the indicator which plays up at a certain engine resonance. It could conceivably be the sensor element itself, though I think this unlikely (its a thermistor {temperature sensitive resitor} which generally either works or fails completely).
