Hello All

I have just replaced my poor dead 3.0l mercruiser with a brand new shiny factory engine (pause while hoots of laughter and cries of you never learn do you die down) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. THe new one runs fine but the temp gauge sits almost in the red,yet the engine is clearly not hot and temp alarm does not sound I am using the original gauges. The senders on the new engine are different to the old so could it be a case of mismatch.I cannot try the sensor out of the stb motor as they are a different size.

While the motor was out I changed a u/s trim sender as the old one did not register until about +3 then shot up.Also on cold start trim gauge read bottom of scale but then moved to +1 after a minute or so running, new sender has fixed first problem but not second,The engine loom has been swapped for the late type as supplied with new engine but all gauges are original. All readings normal on stb motor.
Thoughts gentleman please.

BOAT=bring out another thousand (or four) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'd check the voltage and amperage of the two senders when your happy the engines are at a similar temperature i.e. just after you've started them, and then progressively as they warm up etc. Sounds like a compatability issue between new sender and old meter possibly.

Have had similar problems with senders being incompatible with gauges. As suggested measure voltage between connector on sender and engine block and assuming that the engines are running at the same temp then the voltage should be the same for both senders. The senders can also be checked by removing and connecting earth wire to sender body and the immersing in boiling water, gauge should read 100.
