I have decided that I will not take a permanent berth at Pin Mill this Summer but cruise the East Coast Griffith's style - at the weekends, going back to London to work during the week.

I would like to start planning where to leave Roach for a week at a time. She is only 22ftLOA 4ft draft - so can get in pretty much anywhere - prefer old style yards but have to be VERY close to a train station. Do not mind swinging moorings and she can dry out on legs for short periods - but ideally I would prefer pontoon moorings so I get more sailing time. I would welcome any suggestions so I can start budgeting/planning/making a list of where to go.

Top end of the Deben is well served by Woodbridge train station. Direct trains to London via Ipswich. Only every two hours through. The 7h53m gets into LST 9h25m. You can put a dingy ashore right outside the station.

A very short walk? Please flesh that out a bit. If you mean less than a mile then..... the choice is quite good.

Rochford, 1 mile.
Burnham YH 1 mile
Leigh On Sea, 100yds
Heybridge Basin, 1 mile
Maldon 1/2 mile

Add in the bus service, and a whole new vista awaits.

You have said train stations but I think that might limit you. I don't think there are as many train stations as there were in Griffiths time!

I wouldn't discount some of todays bus services that will allow you to get to a train station. I would work the ather way about. Decided where you might like to moor up after a weekend and then look on the internet to see if there is a convenient bus service to a train station.

You might find that if you plan where you would like to be and ask on here that someone has a mooring available!

Many thanks all. That has given me enough info to start on the planning. Reason I don't like buses is that they are SO unreliable (if the Ipswich to Chelmo is anything to go by) and if I miss pre-booked trains I can add half again to my cruisings costs in train fares, not to mention the stress of it all. I reckon I can walk a mile with all my kit.

Which railway station is Maldon only half a mile from? Nearest is Witham which is about 8 miles IIRC, same for Heybridge... Maldon closed in 1962

You may be interested to know that the service has been improved this year, and there are 2 buses an hour - but not every hour. There are still 2 different companies involved which is absurd on such a short route.

The big joke is just as the bus companies had caught up with the fact that the Chelmo Red Lion was now named the Venture and changed the name on the timetable, the pub has changed hands and is now the Red Lion again /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Within walking distance: Lowestoft, Woodbridge (Deben), Ipswich (Orwell), Manningtree, Mistley, Harwich (Stour), Walton & Frinton Yacht Club basin (Backwaters), Wivenhoe (Colne), Burnham, Althorne, Fambridge, Battlesbridge (Crouch), Leigh, Benfleet (Thames N side), Chatham (Medway), Queenborough (Swale), Whitstable (Thames S side), Ramsgate.

As per previous advice, more in range with local buses although Blackwater is a nightmare from public transport point of view.

I looked at the idea a while back and when I added victualling and the need for a suitable watering hole on Friday/Sunday night into the equation, together with the extra costs associated with just staying somewhere a week, I decided against.

Still, an interesting challenge worthy of investigation. I will be anywhere between the Red Lion at Kirby and The Kings Head at Woodbridge over Easter (but most likely in the Orwell) and would be happy to look at maps through the bottom of a pint glass with you, and anyone else who is interested. PM if available.

Don't know where it went, I hope not to a skip or bonfire.

However the rest of the Venture was blown to glory in filming an episode of Lovejoy, and I think the transom was about all that was left.

Thanks for the the informed reply - would have love to have a pint and look at maps but sadly I am out of the country at present. Yes- the cost thing worries me, but I would like to get to know the East Coast other than the Deben Alde/Ore Orwell and Stour. I think a plan is coming together!

As a local I would strongly advise against using Whitstable. You won't be allowed to leave your boat in the harbour, and anchoring/mooring off is dire in strong onshore winds.

I thought Kelvedon station was the nearest to Maldon? Don't know how far it is though, probably much more than a mile.

Nah... I commute from Kelvedon...According to Google maps, Maldon Hythe to Witham is 7.6 miles, Kelvedon is 12.5
