I bought one of those 4metre cheapo inflatables for occasional use with the cruiser or to take with the caravan. It's a big beast, and we generally inflate it and shove it on an aluminium trailer we had purpose built to go in the van. The thing has floor boards and takes a 30hp o/board but goes like the proverbial-off-a-shovel four-biggies-up with only 20hp.

However, this year I want to take it on the Thames as a run-about when we do our annual cruise but it has to have a name on it, i.e. T/T Ocean Adventurer (the name of our old tub). The dinghy is not the same material as the Avons etc, it's a form of reinforced plastic material, both cheaper and a lot heavier. Here's my question:

What can I use to sign write it for registration? I've got a spare set of stick on plastic names from the cruiser but I question if they'll stay stuck on when I deflate and fold the thing. I'm happy to paint the name on but with what? I might add that on last years caravan holiday everywhere I took this thing I was required to register it (and pay a fat rip-off fee) before launching and they all wanted the name. There must be loads of "Tidal Wave fun boats" out there by now! Can any one help please?

It is probably made of PVC. If so POLYMARINE have suitable paint. Also available stencils (but you need a shorter name to be able to afford stencils) and spray paint.

The low cost solution is a water proof Felt tip marker pen. It'll fade in the sun and need re-doing every year but even with a name that long the pen should last several years.

You could use Inflatable boat paint

The tin comes in an envelope, and you need to blow it up before use /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ;

Or this from Polymarine;

Or just use black permanent marker /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Markers for sheep / cattle ear tags are designed to write on plastic and put up with the outdoor life.

Sorry, but I just love the idea of "inflatable boat paint" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I find the ear tags play merry hell with the pressure retention properties of air in the dinghy... (sounds like a job in the telegraph)

Black marker pen is my solution for my small tender, but from the security point of view, it can be removed with white spirit.
