Television on board

Of all the possible electronic devices I can think of, a TV is the one I would most definitely refuse to have on the boat.

That is one of the joys of boating - leaving behind the news, soaps, adverts etc.

I had thought peeps only use them in marinas to pass the time. Now I find a semi-respectable forumite has actually been watching TV while under way!!

The whole point of a sailing boat is to get away from TV, computers (exc chartplotters), mobile phones, traffic wardens, traffic jams, traffic, driving and people i don't want to be with!!

I'm sure there is a few more i have missed!

I do listen to the radio occaisionally!

Ah - you can get a USB2 digital TV tuner for the laptop now ... combine that with PC Chart software and built-in DVD player, with sound output via your "Car Radio" aux input, and remote wireless antenna you have a complete multimedia & entertainments system!

Bollux, you're taking us back to the dark ages. One of the best evenings MrsE and I ever had was watching Driving Miss Daisy in Portugese in Lisbon.

It is not the device it is how you use it that is important.

And fer wossits sake why are you now called Shy Talk? Some knid of fashion statement?
 
Whatever turns you on - I am sure I could find better ways of entertaining MrsE, if you don't me saying so.

TV's were not designed to go on boats, and boats were not designed to have a TV. If peeps want to sit around doing things normally done at home, they might as well stay at home!

I decided I wanted a name which reflects my discrete manner and low profile. OK?
 
Regarding your thoughts on entertaining MrsE, I'd be obliged if you kept your thoughts to yerself /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Regarding TVs and boats, what do you think that bludy great pole in the middle of your deck is for, if not to place an aerial on?

BTW, thinking of changing my monika to Shrinking_Violet

I've got a telly onboard. It came in quite useful a couple of years ago when I gave a tow to a broken down stink boat just off Walton-on-the-Naze pier. The five children on board were bored with nothing to do for a few hours so I invited them on board by yacht to watch the England - Germany game.

Result? five kids glued to the set through that famous victory and kept out of mischeif for the entire recovery. The owner bought me a skinful that night!!

So yes it does pay to have not only the telly but most important of all the masthead directionless Aerial and the signal amplifier - it also helps to interface it to the Bose speakers........

it's a good thing to have though. Particularly when we're stuffing the aussies. I sail around much of the time on my own with the radio on, or story tapes on the Walkman.

I quite like being diverted from the tedium of sailing. The most succesful diversion was on a boring trip from Weymouth to Lymington. I took £70 of the, quite large, crew playing brag. I bet they wish I'd been watching telly.
