Just been given a v old telescope that has been in the family for years since the 30s. Unfortunately some of the lenses are cracked and its not really the sort of thing that specsavers do. Anyone know of any company that can restore kit like this, it would be a shame not to get it back to its former glory.

Thanks,

Fin

The problems with older telescopes are numerous. One is they were made by so many different opticians who used recipes for their glass that only they knew and then made telescopes to fit round the lenses. The focal lengths they made were specific to their instruments. Another is older lenses are much thinner than new ones so new lenses won't fit the lens cell = major re-engineering. It is often the inner element of the front lens which breaks because it is made from brittle flint glass. I have only managed to find a replacement front lens for one old telescope during the past 20 years so I really don't hold out much hope for your 'scope. The smaller inner lenses are also not available. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Richard.

Thanks I'll try those.

The search to find quality and or value for money can take a while, but the beauty of this forum is the corporate knowledge of good and bad experiences with various companies. Possibly saving a lot of wasted time and money.

Can I suggest you consider doing it yourself.

To get a good idea about how old fashioned telescopes work, take a look at the book described here: http://www.camdenmin.co.uk).

For a source of lenses take a look at http://www.knightoptical.co.uk/, they may well have the sizes you want once you've worked out what you need.

Regards

Richard.
