I'm considering fitting Tek-Dek in my cockpit. Has anyone else had this product installed? If so, are you pleased with it?

I'm particularly interested to know: how 'authentic' it looks once fitted; whether it's grippy or slippy underfoot; and whether it is comfy or not if it is used on cockpit seating.

I guess it may be too recent a product for anyone to comment meaningfully on durability, but any observations would be gratefully received.

Hi
I fitted it two years ago as cockpit seating, several people have thought it to be the 'real thing' ,one even asked what oil I used on it, as he was sitting on it. Still looks good, very durable, only downside - it does get a bit hot in direct sun. Purists will never accept it but I really can't see the problem on a GRP boat, much better to look at than treadmaster IMHO

Howard.

Agree with H4B. Anyone with a GRP boat who thinks a 'real teak' deck is the real thing is deluding themselves a bit. It is purely a covering that requires hundreds of holes to be drilled into the deck to make the covering look like a teak deck of days gone by. Just expensive trouble for someone not so far down the line.

Tek Dek is funny stuff, it seems to grip better as it gets wetter. Thus it is particularly good in areas prone to wetness. Personally it would not be my choice for seating, cause I reckon its a bit rough for my skin.

Hi Andrew, I have laid 2No 1 metre square test panels withTek Dek and found it easy to work with, it looks like the real thing. It has been down for two seasons with no sign of lifting and still looks as if it has just been laid. I am now going to replace all my decks.

I have had Flexiteek fitted to my decks and, IMHO it looks a damn sight better than Tek Dek & Dek King (I saw them all, virtually side by side at the London boat show last year).
If I were you I'd get hold of a Flexiteek sample or better still see if there's a boat near you that has it fitted before you make up your mind.
I've posted these photos before in another thread but I'll put them up again: (at the risk of seeming repetitive)

We are main authorised tek dek installers - you are welcome to pm me if you want any specific information. Tek dek and Flexiteek are the major players in this type of product. There are some differences in their properties but aesthetically they look pretty similiar.

I had Victor Aspey's company fit Tek-Dek in my cockpit and bathing platform in July.
The results are everything required and I can only recommend their service - good people to deal with.
As far as using it on seating - I think it would very quickly become hard on the bum - but with over cushions may be OK.

Yes, I also got some samples of both at the London boat show last year, as you say the Flexiteek does look a damned sight better, but only if next to Tek-Dek! On its own the Tek-Dek looks great. Now you have had it fitted what about the durability, does it mark easily? And what about 'hot foot' problems I am afraid that it may get a bit unbearable on a hot day.

That would be a nice problem to have at the moment!

Mal, So far my only gripe is that oils can stain the product (also white spirit is a no no). You've got to be careful about oily food stuffs too, crisps etc and boat builders boots! However Diesel seems ok although I do chuck a bucket of water over the deck before filling up to be sure,,Wine stains aren't a problem & oil stains can be sanded off if needs be.
So far unfortunately, we haven't had much 'hot' weather to test how warm it becomes to the touch but then again I like me and my crew to wear shoes for safety reasons.
When I finally get outa here and livaboard somewhere were it is hot I'll let you know!

I am surprised some people think flexi-teek looks better than tek dek. Maybe on a small sample but viewing a full deck may change peoples opinions. Plenty of people who think the opposite. Anyhow, they are both great products and customers will not be disappointed with either choice.

Permateek has been around for some time. Tek dek and flexiteek have most of market ....... UV stability, adhesion etc. etc. Both have developed a good track record. However, all materials will suffer problems due to poor installation.

Apparently it's welded together and not glued so stays together better.....

Don't know about Tek Dek but as far as flexiteek is concerned the 'adhesive' used it's a solvent weld, similar to that used in uPVC pipe work, the join should be as strong as the material. I suspect Tek Dek and Permateek are the same.

Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to reply. Really helpful. I will certainly check out Flexiteek before making a decision, as Crispin's yacht looks fantastic!

I find it's very hard to judge the finished look by examining samples alone but I've now made arrangements to look at a boat with Tek-Dek fitted, which hopefully will help me to make up my mind.

After seeing the pics of the boat, i checked out the tek dek website, and ordered the sample last night, and was surprised to see a package in the hallway when i got home from work today, our post normally arrives at around 11am, so very fast turnround on sending out the sample pack. i will be browsing through it later..
