Teflon tape? Wos Teflon tape?

Santa T is going in the water tomoz, v. excited. Well, when I say "is"...

Just bought new petrol tank for outboard and fuel line for us to assemble. Fine. We have fuel line and the 2 connectors. Cool. Now we get home and look at the instructions it looks like you have to plug the hose line into the connector, but wind some Teflon tape around the male prong tank connector screw thread before you attach it to the tank. They never mentioned this at the chandles when asked "What bits do we need?". Went to Halfords on desperate mission and asked for the tape - bloke just looked perplexed. Had never heard of it. So do we need to find some of this tape? Or not? Or wot? Will our plans of launching tomorrow be scuppered if we don't use tape?

I think it is what is usually called PTFE tape you can get it at B&Q plumbing dept

It's amost certainly referring to PTFE tape which is easily obtainable from plumbers merchants or B&Q. It's possible that in other parts of the world that this is referred to as Teflon tape. I'm sure a bit of searching on the web would confirm.

Normally referred to as PTFE tape, but sometimes as Teflon tape., most DIY shops or plumbers merchants stock it.

Even sad old Halfords stocks PTFE tape, but their moronic sales assistants wouldn't recognise it. But I'm now banned from our local branch ...

Couldn't get them to look out an oil filter for my Perkins 4-108 last year though I know they stock them, because their new improved computer system could no longer match part numbers between makes. So in a fit of exasperation I took in the old one half full of filthy used oil dripping all up the aisle and then plonked it on their sales counter ... Mr Halford had a severe humour shortfall on this one.

to clarify, it's very thin and non-adhesive. you wind a few turns tightly around the male thread in the same direction as you will screw on the nut, then snap it off. it should bed well down into the grooves and will slide easily as you tighten the fitting. a new application of tape is required every time you open the joint.

PTFE tape, obtained from B&Q plumbers merchants etc. Wind on to the male fitting,as you look at the end of the fitting wind on clockwise or else it will just come off as you put fittings together. wind on very tight, the tape at times will snap but just keep winding.....a bit of hit and miss as if you put on too little the joint will leak, if you put on too much the joint will be too tight to make.
