Fitted new last year and was surprised/alarmed/embarrassed when the whole lot was found to be solid as I moved away from the berth.

The fault was found to be at the rudder end, where seawater has splashed onto the sliding bit of kit and the rod jammed in the tube, glued there by a combination of salt and grease. It took a blowtorch to free it!

What would you do? Fit some sort of protective sleeve? (I should say that we have found and eradicated the leak). And what oil or grease do you recommend for what must now be regular attention?

Anyone had a similar problem?

tends to be the grease used on the tube. I had a lot of trouble on mine (which steers the outboard) until I started using Quicksilver general grease with teflon - magic stuff which also works excellently as a lubricant for the winches.
