Last year we travelled from Wales to the IOM & then on to Glasson Dock, we have a video, but can’t show this yet, sorry. I’ve been a member of the Lancaster Boat club (Narrow boats & Freemans) for years so we arrived for the first time at a Lancaster cruising club event on Meekatharra.

During the competition (boat handling) To quote the LCBC cruiser “the biggest boat Meekathra started up and confirmed why it is known as “the growler” ! for those of you that do not know this boat its a giant gin palace with two huge engines and thrusters all over the place. Haydn & Deborah growled round the dock with a few (well actually quite a few) smiling happy boat club members on this enormous boats fly bridge.

Then in the next edition.......

One day I will be able to get past this page in the Cruiser, without having to apologise for something in a previous Cruiser, but not today! Haydn has informed me that the Giant Meekatharra does not have a girlie button:D:D but two “twin shafts”. I stand corrected.

Right a translation for the slow readers. I thought it was funny anyway.

We went to Glasson Dock, for a get together with Debs old canal club, who hold their summer events there. We took quite a pile of them round the dock for the ride. It's not very big, so we had to twizzel around a bit, just to make it interesting.

The lady who writes the club magazine and drives a narrow boat, reported.......“the biggest boat Meekatharra started up and confirmed why it is known as “the growler” ! for those of you that do not know this boat its a giant gin palace with two huge engines and thrusters all over the place. She thort MF must have at least ten thrusters. (girlie button.)

Ok I give up.:D

Thought it entertaining too. .. knowing your stance in respect to the need of thrusters on a 35 foot, twin screw, I found the comment about "two twin shafts" .. ie' four shafts too good not to pass a comment on.. :D

Funniest thing was, after we loaded the passengers. Folk started pushing MF's bows off. No idea where they thought we were going. In front was a bloody great wall. So three times they pushed it off and three times I got it back. They made hard work out of leaving the quay, eventually they relented. We had to go out side ways, no way back or forth.. Evenually the big round fender was in position. Bit of a roar and off we went. Side ways. No probs fore or aft.

Having spent today on a small canal NB I know where they are coming from, Haydn. I have never handled such an awkward & unhandy craft.

None of the family crew could get it to go in a straight line (they cope with Sea Rush easily) & it took me ages to get the hang of it. It had horrendous prop walk at all times, it needed prop wash in order to steer at all, put the engine in neutral & you immediately lost steerage, although the loss of prop walk sent you off in the opposite direction to normal.

Once it started to drift off course you start to correct & nothing happens, so you apply more rudder, & more untils she starts to swing the opposite way & keeps going despite massive corrections to bring it back under control. The end result is an unstable oscillation. The only way to do it is by applying small amounts of rudder early & stopping early to prevent the over compensation.

Looking miles ahead & apply small corrections early & then centreing again early meant that a straight line could be kept, but it needed constant concentration to prevent oscillations starting up. Putting it in & out of parking spots definitely needs a good sideways push on one end or the other to get out into the fairway & a leap ashore with ropes to pull to get her anywhere near the bank.

Even Sea Rush with her single prop & twin keels is a doddle in comparison.
