Front sails, eh! Talk about dumbing down.

They are not front sails, they are little sails. It is clearly shown on a picture on a wall of the Cowes chain ferry - in the sitting down place nearest the sea. I would post a picture but I don't know how.

I'm not sure front sails and little sails are the same thing.

I've seen some baggy, colourful front sails that look quite big; for some reason there is often a man swearing loudly when these sails are hung up.

And some boats have an extra stick right at the back with quite a small triangular sail on it.

If you told me how to do it I would send the picture. People in Cowes know about boats because it says so on the things they wear.

...and it should be noted that a yacht in very heavy storm conditions must fly the mid(main)sail, the colourful front sail and the little front sail. This is known as sailing under trisail.

If this does not work - i.e. one ends up like the famous Becken of Cowes picture - the intrepid mariner will simultaneously lengthen the halyard guy and sheet by at least 60m. This is known as lying to a storm sail.

If this a back sail does it mean that the sail known as a main will be the middle sail ? Therefore, the average saily floaty thing has a front and middle sail ......
