Firstly I know that this forum (YBW.com) has many sections already(some which appear to have very few visitors)

However I would be interested to hear peoples views on a technical archive section dedicated to alternative spares.

The reason being that over the last few months within the various sections of the Yachting and Boating World Forums section (PBO, Mobo, Scuttlebut, Thames etc) there have been some really usefull posts regarding alternative spares sources.
For example the common parts on Volvo engines maritime and road from the mobo section. The recent post one here regarding yanmar alternator belts bought from a motorfactors at half swindelry prices. Not to mention the numerous alternative oil/fuel filter part numbers etc.

I am a regular on a Land Rover forum and when ever we get a good post worth keeping we just pm the moderator stating "stick this in the tech section as a keeper" next day it is in there for all to see.

When I first joined this forum the search facility was brilliant and I found many answers without needing to post, however with the new search facility I find it hard to find even my own posts.
The principal of the section would be just and archive of tech spares equivalent sources, where the good posts could be archived, it would not be a discussion forum. It could be just above the "Lounge" for example.

What I do, when I find a thread of particular interest, is to favourite it (bottom of page) then you can access all your favourite threads from user options whenenever you want

I do that too (when I remember) but that is only usefull if you have read/seen that thread. My Idea is that it is an easy reference section to read for people that might not have read all forum sections, also for newcomers like I was a few months ago.

This kind of thing is best served by a "WIKI" - this is a website / reference that is maintained by the users. There's lots of wiki software about, and I'm sure YBW could make one available on the site.... then you could add an "Alternative spares" section and start the ball rolling.

google for Wikipedia for an example of a very big/successfull wiki.
