Teak shower floor maintenance

We are now proud owners a V42 (pics to follow) and are looking forward to a handover in the UK next week. She starts her journey to the Med on the 20th, with us targeting our first night aboard in Sant Carles on the 23rd.

Our Bavaria had a plastic shower floor, with a mahogany washboard so was easy to keep clean. The Princess has 2 showers but both have teak laid floors.

The question is how easy are these to maintain and what do you use to keep them looking fresh as I can't help thinking that warm soapy water and shampoo will take its toll over time.

We have the opportunity to stock her up with UK cleaning agents before she is trucked south, although a batch of scatter cushions turned up today so boot space is becoming limited already :-(

Had my boat for 10 years with a teak shower grating , every once in a while I clean it on the pontoon with a hose and a soft brush one with split ends and it looks fine.

If its grubby then I guess Wessex two part teak cleaner would do the trick, works for my decks that's for sure.

Ah thanks it's the same on the Bavaria. But to be clearer in my description it seems to be a fixed shower floor, rather than a removable grate.

If it's solid teak, even relatively thin 6mm planks, then I think occasional warm water and soap will be a walk in the park compared to the sun and acid rain that most external teak decks have to deal with. I wouldn't expect you to have any problems with it, and for cleaning just a gentle scrub with a scouring pad across the grain occasionally. You could acid treat once a year if it gets discoloured.

Having said that, the removable grating in my Princess showers are wafer thin teak veneer, which obviously doesn't last nearly as long.

Hi Andy,

Have got exactly the same type of teak on my shower floors on Charisma (also at SCM). Haven't had to touch them since new 2011 and they still look good. As per previous reply they are not in a severe environment, no direct sun and regularly washed down with fresh water.

Must say they look as good as new, and the "less harsh environment" comments make a lot of sense.
