My Dehler 22 has teak ply facings on the cockpit seating covering the GRP, with false black caulking lines to make it look realistic.

One of my winter projects is to replace it as there is a little rot in the edges of the rear most pieces near the tiller, but the main pieces are not well designed and the mainsheet traveller has caught under the rim and cracked a section off.

My eyeball popped out when I saw the price of a sheet of this stuff. Does anyone know where it can be obtained at a reasonable price, and/or what are the alternatives such as TekDek like. Its only a small area really, but its looking awful pricey to do unless I'm just looking in the wrong places.

I'd just take it back to GRP, but suspect the glue for the ply has messed up the surface a bit.

All advice/ suggestions gratefully received.

Tim

My company are authorised agents for tek dek. If you want any specific advice then feel free to pm me. To price I will need to know sq m.

See my own question a few postings back but unanswered (sob sob)
Yours is a much smaller job though. You could abandon the teak idea completly but a bit of wood always looks good.
There is the Robins Elite teak deck but this is £300 for an 8x4 sheet.
I note that the also sell teak faced ply and do this in part sheets, you might be able to create your own 'planking effect' by chasing (routing) out the grooves and caulking these up.
Or buy some thin teak strips and lay them on marine ply.
Nice winter project for you!!
regards

The stuff on it currently is exactly like Robbins Elite teak deck.. A 2.5x 1.2m sheet in 6mm ply is £329. I'm sure there is a good reason its so expensive, but it was a bit of a shock.

Yes I need to measure up really, but I've just been mulling it over up to now, hence no figures as yet.

Thanks for info.

Yes it looks like their teak faced ply with the 'rubber' strips let in and the price trebled!!
You say yours has not lasted well is this the product which has failed or has it been employed in an inappropiate place/way.
Someone told me that I would still have to treat the teak veneered stuff like 'proper' teak (ie oil it) but this seems odd as it should be completly stable due to being bonded onto ply.

To be fair to the product its been on since 1986, and was not tended for at least 18 months before I bought the boat, and yes you have to treat it somehow as its a genuine teak veneer face on the ply.

Tek Dek has its uses, and is especially good for bathing platforms or other applications where you need grip and it is habitually wet. However, it is not so good if you want to sit on it!
