Teak Decking (TekDek etc) - What is it\'s purpose?

This is not just a question for question sake as it may appear.

The laminate style teak decking (TecDek etc).

Is it fitted purely for aesthetic reasons or does it serve a purpose and if so what purpose? (im presuming non slip)

Thanks

Re: Teak Decking (TekDek etc) - What is it\'s purpose?

Boats already fitted with teak need a lot of maintenance or it turns green or silver that not everyone likes so many Teak owners want the maintenance teak taking off which leaves a mess that needs to be covered .

Tek Dek is ideal for this.

In my case I had a carpet that needed vacuuming ( thanks Chris /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) regularly, got wet regularly which meant wet socks

Also my teak steps needed regular maintenance that I couldnt do without wrecking the carpet.

I took the carpet out but the GRP floor looked a mess when wet shoes walked on it.

Tek Dek looks good year round and yes it is none slip.

Full report and lots of photos here /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Without being too nosy, what sort of price did the cockpit cost? About the same size as my cockpit, except yours looks better.

Re: Teak Decking (TekDek etc) - What is it\'s purpose?

I wish I had included the cost in my report because I cant remember now /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Costs are very varied and not at all easy to follow.

Tek Dek retails at £250 + VAT per square meter, this includes fitting.

Many companies charge extra for template and this is when it helps with the costs to find a company that has already got a template for your boat or a fitter who does not charge you for template.

This is partially why I recommended MC products as they are flexible with their prices and didn't charge me for a template .

They have a large library of patterns and are keen to extend their pattern list of popular boats.

I will look tonight and PM you if I find it.

Thanks for the info contained in that link Daka. Firstly I think it looks *&*&ing Superb.

With the TekDek style product (I have requested some samples from Tek-Dek) is the feel very similar to "Real Teak" or is it spongy?

Also does any water stay on-top of the Tek-Dek or does it absorb in slightly as I imagine "Real Teak" would (or do I have that wrong also)?

I am a complete noob at all this and genuinely appreciate the info.

Hi, I'm surprised you haven't received more replies about artificial teak on this thread as there are extremely mixed views about teak and lookalikes on here.

Some even refer to plastic teak as 'Lino' which is a bit cruel but makes the point.

If you are lucky enough to have a boat made by one of the 'big names' and probably over 40' long then, almost certainly, you would not consider Tek-Dek or anything similar as this would be seen to devalue your pride and joy as it would not be considered of similar quality.

I think it has it's place though in smaller areas on some of the american swim platforms, but it would look too much throughout the whole cockpit as with some Cranchis' like the Zaffiro.

From what I've seen of the plastic replacements, they appear to be quite effective but rediculously over priced. The suppliers say that it's because you only have to fit it once and it is far superior without maintenance.

Pah! Have a look at some older plastic teak, it doesn't last either, it looks terrible as it gets older and you lose contrast between the black and the gold. I think they have over priced it to make some of us think it is better than it is. Plastic strip extrusion is very cheap to produce as we all know. This product should be for DIY but if you're not that way inclined it should be less expensive to fit than real teak as it is quicker to stick down in panels and a new strip is cheap if it needs to be discarded through any error.

Thanks Roger.

Our boat is only 27ft long and I have been considering it for the swim platform and was interested in forumite' views on it. I like to "have a go" at stuff myself and so would be wanting a DIY job if I go for it.

Good on yer, but shop around, there are several available and some will peddle 'softer more flexible / professional' at you. They're pretty much the same I think you'll find and they are all flexible if its warm.

Take time on your template and try and speak to someone that has had a go.

We have a friend in Sparkes that has just done the same on his Jeanneau and I must say it looks nice. He said it was quite easy to do by following instructions but he did try a few simple pieces first.

Good luck and don't forget to post pics before and after on here! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Teak Decking (TekDek etc) - What is it\'s purpose?

Just finished cutting & shaping Tek-Dek to my first template.

It's straigtforward to make the template, we used linning paper from B&Q, dead simple.

Excellent time to have the project at home while the boats layed up & enough time to really make a great set of prefabricated panels ready to lay in the spring.

Inspiration can be gained from here,

http://www.tek-dek.co.uk/gallery.php

Its not difficult & special tools are not required & from what ive seen it can transform a dull cockpit.

Just as many have done on here.
