Dear All

I was looking to buy a three folding teak table for my cockpit but at just under £200 feel that it is a bit expensice from UK suppliers. Have found a similar table on the internet by a teak company specialling in marine teak furnishings for approx $170 but have to make payment as follows:-

"We ask for payment (in the FULL company name - Thai
Teak Marine Co., Ltd.) prior to shipping, by CASHIERS
CHECK, MONEY ORDER, BANK DRAFT or US$ CHECK air
mailed to our STREET address in Thailand"

Can anyone advise if the above means of payment seems ok as they do not accept credit card. What (if any safeguards would I have if the money went missing)?

The web site of the company is

http://www.thaiteakmarine.com

and seems genuine

Anyone deat with them in the past or have any knowledge of the banking system in repect to the above

Many thanks in anticipation for your advice

Personally, I wouldn't send money/cheque etc like this. I wouldn't even be happy with credit card in these circs.

I bought one at SIBS.... stand just near the holiday inn....

I dont think I spent anywere near £200...... wait till the show and buy one in person.... nice guys!

I’ve not bought off these particular people but I have sent several thousand pounds, in US$, to a couple of companies in Taiwan via bank transfer prior to receiving goods with no problem.

Don't worry, Donald L Petrie ( aka Pete,) is the proprietor and is a good fellow.

He has produced a couple of racks for my steiner binoculars, and short wave radio and PLB's. ( see 307HB at http://www.thaiteakmarine.com/catalog/page39.htm)

I've sent loads of drawings with measurements and he has turned those into good quality finished products for me.

The only down side is that postage/shipping costs distort the price a bit but you do get what you want on a custom made basis if his catalogue doesn't satisfy your needs.

As to the rather unusual payment methods- he keeps his banking US based and your cheques will be sent from Thailand to his bank in the States- it isn't a problem for you, he will produce and deliver what you order in local hardwood, which in its raw state has a slightly pinkish tone, leaving you to varnish/oil/stain or whatever to your preference

If you would like to see my photos of the racks I have commisioned from him and which are now on my boat, then PM me your e-mail address and I'll send them to you

Edit content:- Oh yes, register the envelope containing your bankers draft to ensure delivery and reimbursement if lost- typically it takes 4-6 working days for the mail to be delivered from UK to there, and he will confirm receipt if you ask him too- he sometimes needs reminding!

Finally, everything I've had has come by airmail and there has been no surcharge by Customs but any large item may have to come by UPS/FEDEX/DHL- if so then watch out for VAT and other charges

thanks to all that have posted I have also found some items on testimonials on his web site which appear to be genuine and the fact that he has been recommended by "GIN" above will also look at the compass cockpit table mentioned. Will also look at the situation re airmail and customs

Many thanks to all for your assistance
