- is it a Henderson in disguise?

I need a new Lavac pump for my toilet and have seen this:

can I get away with this as apposed to using this:

I certainly had the big Henderson pump on my Lavac. I owned the boat for 7 years. I fitted new valves on acquisition and the pump put up with a lot of use during my ownership with no problems, or blockages at all. I often had 4/5 people on the boat.

Yes I think it is a Henderson pump but now sold as the Whale Mk5 Sanitation pump

Possibly just a white version of a bilge pump.

Take a look at all the specs in the Whale pumps brochure to see if the one you picture has any significant differences from the MK5, apart from its colour (the ladies wont like a black one though)

Interestingly the black Mk V is recommended a "Holding Tank Discharge which seems fine to me. The white one seems to have the virtue of odour free seals, and encased diaghram and an inspection hatch.

There are differences (apart from the colour). However they are both basically the good old Henderson MkV. The biggest difference is the orientation of the actuator rocker ( the bit that you put the handle into). With the white one you have a choice of through deck or bulkhead rocker. The black one, called the Universal, has a standard rocker and you change the orientation by using alternative locating lugs on the pump body. Do check that it suits your installation. The other point is that The white one is made of sanitation grade material so the pump body will not absorb odours. This may justify the extra cost. The flow rate is also slightly different. In my experience, the spares kits are identical. Saw a post recently where ( Captainslarty I think) swapped his MkV for a Whale Titan (even more expensive), but he says it's great.

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

Thanks, I managed to get a new black one for quite a good price. So that is that.

I have a chipped seat, and that affects the vacuum too. This toilet is getting expensive unless I can get away with stickyflex to patch the lid up.

[/ QUOTE ] You should be able to get a new seat, or lid or seals. Make sure you get the right one though as I dont think they are interchangeable between the Lavac models.

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

Yes this old boat thing in madness! Indeed you are right. Lid £66.80 and then SEAT is also another £66.80. I have a chip in both. Maybe I should buy a new one, take the lid off, and sell the rest of the thing in e-bay?

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

Force 4 were / are advertising the complete toilet fo £87 recently.

On a slightly different tack, I'm trying to decide between Lavac and Jabsco for a new installation. I like the Lavac concept but one thing that is detering me slightly is that (according to Lavac manual) the flush operation requires 8-10 pumps followed by a short pause and then a further 5 pumps. Seems like a lot of pumping. I'd be interested in peoples experiences of actual use.

Thanks

[/ QUOTE ] Buy the Lavac! Relatively trouble free. Uses what is (as you see from above) a Henderson bilge pump. Simple to service that but only needs attention at infrequent intervals. Mechanically so simple. Nothing really to go wrong with the toilet itself.

Make sure you can install it as per the instructions. The loops in the pipework and the air bleed in the inlet pipe are vital to its operation

Can of course get electric version if wanted.

The pumping is no problem with a nice big handle on the pump and it will never send a jet of water up your sleeve

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

Lavac every time, simple reliable and in the unlikely event of a blockage easy to clear. The pumping regime becomes second nature after a while.

On my last boat the pump had a Y connector to a second tube, which in extremis could be used as an additional emergency bilge pump, never used in anger I'm happy to say.

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

Definitely the Lavac, for all the reasons given, also with diverter valves you could also pump out the anchor chain locker and holding tank if you have them.

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

I have had a Lavac for a good number of years and would not want anything else. The extended pumping helps rid the pump and pipework of any debris. I think the pause in pumping is a good habit, one post suggested that it helps draw clean water into the system and prevent smells. He thought that as the inlet and outlet were so close together dirty water could otherwise be drawn back into the system - sems to make sense.

Re: Taylors Lavac Toilet Lids?

Thanks folks, I think I'm convinced.

PS need to change my topic of converstaion at the sailing club. I'm getting a reputation as a toilet geek! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I did an investigation on this and indeed your right, but the price they were quoting was for the toilet only. You need to pay for the pump as an extra! That is min £80 although Solent Marine have the audacity to charge £160 for the pump alone - so shop around.
