I have a Taylors 079D which I have serviced and am about to refit. However, I note from the manual that the thermocouple probe is supposed to go into the flame pot "at the rear top left hand side", mine was loosely pushed up into the tube in the centre of the flame pot when I bought the boat. I always struggled to keep the fuel supply running and suspected the thermocouple / magnetic cut off. It got to the stage where I could only keep the heater going if the blue button was held in manually. Not safe so this is why it was dismantled and serviced. Anyway, I am now wondering if the probe should live in the tube or at the rear top left hand side of the flame pot as per the manual. Trouble is I can't see how it should fit. There is a different hole in the pot at this point, bigger than all the other pin prick holes and about 3mm dia. However the probe is too big to fit and there is no means of fixing it in place, can anyone enlighten me. Also is there any way to test the thermocouple / magnetic cut off before I buy a new ones. They are not cheap!!

I have the same model and confirm the correct location for the thermocouple tip is in the slightly larger hole at rear, top left of the bottom burner pot.
It is a pest because there is nothing to actually hold it in position. If for any reason the copper microbore tube is dislodged the tip comes out. Its a pain to refit as the hole is not normally visible.
The only way of testing as far as I am aware would be to heat the tip with a blowtorch while holding the blue button in... then release. If the fuel continues to drip the thermocouple is working.
I now have the heater set up so after a meths pre-heat I just need to press the blue button for a second or two without touching the needle metering valve.

Thanks. Tried it tonight and yes the tip of the probe does fit in said hole. I'll run a bench test at the weekend and see if it makes a difference, For the price of the things new I can't believe that there is no way of securing it!

I slightly enlarged the hole in the burner pot to take the second thicker section of the thermocouple probe. Made it a tight interference fit and it stays in place nicely. Bench tested it and now stays dripping when the blue button is released, many thanks.

Or just bend the pipe slightly so that it presses the tip into the hole. It is quite springy enough.

The complete 'normal' Taylors spares kit is (still?) less than a hundred quid. You don't get much change out of £100 when you get a man in to have a look at a troublesome Eberspaecher, apparently.

You say you have just serviced your Taylors, I too did this last week for the first time in 400litres of useage ( so two winters). I am sure you did these steps but... I removed the mica inspection cover, then flushed the lower unit copiously under a tap to dislodge soot whilst poking a small soft toothbrush around and rodding the wee holes in the central column using the end of a reel of rigging seizing wire. Surprising how much crud comes out too ( half a cup full in fact)

And 'rodded' the drip feed too to remove carbon build up and gunk of course.

Chimney got a dunk in the ocean to clean it, the internal part in the cabin got a plastic bag over the heater and a wadded up tissue pushed down from above to achieve the same, and tadah, Bobs your toasty uncle.
Result is when running correctly an even column of blue flame around the central burner, with all the wee holes in it 'visible', no yellow flame/inefficient combustion, simples.
Love it, no moving parts, no electricery, no noise. Hope yours is sorted now.
