The States of Guernsey ( a bit like your government but less spin and we dont have an army thank God) yesterday decided not to Tax marine diesel for liesure boats in the future.

This hopefully will keep Guernsey as a major destination for visiting motor boats and sailing yachts alike, especially after red diesel bites at the end of 2008.

They have also decided to only charge a minimal tax on marine petrol.

Now both Guernsey and Jersey will have tax free diesel and hopefully will continue as a good cruising ground along with the Normandy and Brittany coasts for Uk and continental visiting boats filling up with the tax free stuff on the way in and on the way back home.

This one is good news for the Guernsey boat owner and the visitors alike.

Would be nice if you built some more marinas so we could come over and berth with you, also some cheap air fares too then we would be weekending with you all the time.

Cant see me doing much UK boating after next year at £1.00 plus per litre, will be going abroad for sure.

Well I don't think its tax FREE! I was in the C.I. last year and we were paying more for diesel than on the south coast of England! So I can see the C.I. pitching their prices possibly just under the new U.K. prices after 2008.

Living in Guernsey there are higher distribution costs for all things including fuel, based on quantity moved and total market etc.

The choices are fuel outlets in St Peter Port and direct from tanker.

The good news is that autumn 2008 when it is £1 a litre in the UK we should be a fraction of that which will help Uk Boaters who visit and Us.

lol - France will also (continue to) be a fraction if it goes up to full road prices.

I foresee Dover and Ramsgate marina prices going up from 2009!

In a topical twist I wonder if UK customs will start fining boats returning from Holland with full tanks?

Won't affect Dover as the fuel pontoon is privately run by Hammonds. Marina is run by Dover District Council.
I will certainly be buying all my fuel in France or CI after next year though if UK goes to white diesel price!

I do not think there is any 'if' about it - from November 2008 we will be at raod diesel prices plus the marine factor - well over £1 per litre.

The boat market is already slow but when the time comes to actually pay these prices - it will be much, much worse. The reason is that many still think there is an 'if' about it when there is none. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

what I meant Nick was that most boats could refuel in France from these marinas in the same way as Poole boats used to run to Weymouth (just) to save 20% on the unit price a few years ago.

yes I agree. I thought you were referring to mooring charges. I can see UK marina fuel suppliers business from leisure boats being severely impacted in the future where it is feasible for boats to refuel in france. I'm based in Dover so France is actually the nearest place to visit so it's a no brainer for me after next year. The only thing that may make a difference is if the UK road tanker price for white diesel compares with the french price as I can refuel from a tanker. Last price I paid from texaco was 36p/litre (last october) but not sure what will happen next year. I assume the vat is going up from 5% to 17.5% as well as the tax hike to 48p?

I've just checked the pump price for marine diesel at Boatworks, St Peter Port:

45p per litre.

The useless attendant couldn't tell me if this was the price with or without the tax that was imposed - and has been decided to be removed

I'm not going to guess because I'm confused and baffled and annoyed at the States for one of their more brainless sagas.
