Decks to be painted in non slip deck paint and wooden toe rails, deck capping etc that are fixed to said deck, to be cleaned and oiled.

What comes first, how woudl you tackle it

Cheers

Interesting, I was thinking I'd do it the other way round in case a bit of oil on the deck prevented the paint from adhering.

And I was thinking that the first thing to do was definitely to clean off the woodwork, so that you didn't need to worry about scraping the new paint while doing so :)

Less clear whether you then do the paint or the oil, but I was leaning towards oil (ie, Ken's sequence) because bare untreated wood will soak up spills fairly permanently, whereas if you get the odd speck of wet paint on the oiled wood it will probably wipe off (though obviously you should still mask it).

Clean the deck first, then clean the wood, but don't oil. Not a good thing to do as it absorbs dirt and needs regularly recoating. Use a proper finish that does not require constant maintenance and looks better such as International Woodskin.
