Anyone body else noticed how bad the quality of their tarps have got, fitted a 12 x 9m (200gsm) tarp last April and had to replace last month as it had degraded that bad water was cascading down the walls of my workshop next door to the shed, went up on the roof and the tarp was white problem is the tarp i ordered was blue, gutter was full of blue dust.

It would seem the plastic coating had literally washed away now this wouldn't be a problem if it were an ebay cheapy but your talking 130 quid delivered and i got little more than a year out of it, the previous one gave me three years trouble free service, still got it infact and the material feels noticably stiffer than the newer one that replaced it. If it hadn't chafed through i'd still use it.

Since replacing the main shed with another i'm now writing this with six buckets in various places around the shop collecting water so now the shop tarp needs replacing, so that'll be another 100 odd quid, i guess the elephant in the room is get the boat finished and i wouldn't have to keep buying tarps i guess.

Its just that i don't remember replacing these with such frequency that i now seem to ................................................

Ive done better with black damp proof membrane. I have use the same piece ( although it has split down the middle where originally folded , but is now taped together) to cover my tender every winter for over 20 years .

My Mirror cover is made from liner for a water storage lagoon. Apart from where its been damaged its as good as it was 40 years ago


I reckon two years with no leaks at all is the max I have ever had from Tarpaulins direct's woven polytarps ( < 3 months from a lightweight one!)
 
Hi Vic, i've used similar material to yours to waterproof the ends of the boatshed when the OSB gave up the ghost, will take a trip out to the builders merchants tomorrow.

heres what the main roof looked like after a year, bloody awful quality if you ask me:

Managed to put my hand through it in several places whilst shimmying upto the ridge with the new tarp in hand, the sides are in perfect nick though which initially had me puzzled as to why water was pissing in when looking up from the ground, it wasn't till i got up there and saw the above that i realised the problem.
 
Hmm, I've used them for several years. I will be replacing the 200gm tarp for my winter cover this year - the original lasted 9 yrs, which I can't complain about. Carefully roped down with extra eyelets over a wooden ridge - it is white though, perhaps the white is better than the blue?
Is it worth complaining to Tarpaulins Direct?

I did think about it until i saw the packets that the tarps come in had paperwork inside written in Chinese so i guess Tarps direct are just 'unit shifters', (i originally thought they made them) so pretty pointless imo, i'll probably end up ordering from them again as i cant find anyone else that does the size tarp i need. Had a good google last night and realised they have the market pretty much sewn up, fwiw the old tarp that felt better than the new one i replaced it with was white but at the time of ordering i couldn't get it in white so had to take blue.
 
Try the monotarps, they aren't woven but have an encapsulated grid to add strength. I've been using a clear one every winter for several years and, apart from a couple of tears and pulled eyelets it seems to be lasting well.
