I am wondering about making a Tent to protect the deck.
You know the type, using the boom as the ridge and sloping down to the toerails.
My quandry is, what type of material to use, as it has to be easily folded into a small bundle for storage, yet strong enough to withstand the rigours of our weather.
Is there an alternative to tarpaulin sheet.?

thx
Howard

Cheap plastic tarps can be surprisingly good. However, they never seem to come in a size that fits what you want so you end up with eother partial cover or overlaps.

Long term there is no substitute for a properly made fitted acrylic canvas cover. I have had mine now for 15 years or so, on the boat at least 4 winter months a year. Bit patched but still functioning. Packs up small (from 26' boat) for summer storage.

Acrylic canvas is de regeur with various weights and colours available.
Sunbrella is best, but its difficult to source in the UK being a US made product.
For a cockpit tent PU coated stuff is best. With proper hemming and grommets fitted with a punch and die kit it will be as strong as a heavy canvas tarp.
Try Point North, Hawke House Marine, Martex.
Ebay also lists other sellers.

Tarpaulins Direct (Bradshaws) do a Topgrade woven plastic sheet which is far superior to those supplied by B&Q, Screwfix etc.

But these are flat sheets, not tailored and are still prone to wear if not fitted/protected properly. However, if put over a suitable temporary structure (as I have just done) they're good enough (so far).

For a proper year in year out 'winter cover' to protect the decks (ie without any real headroom for working along the decks) I'd go for a tailored acrylic cover (sunbrella type material). Expensive at first but cheaper in the long run.

the best, by far, products are those made by Monarflex.

Over many years we have used them for agricultural and boaty porpoises, and I've no hesitation in recommending them. Lots of clever fixings as well.; translucent, green, black...

>Kayospruce stocks Sunbrella

Looking at their site they call it Dickson-Sunbrella which is a furniture fabric. We certainly looked at them and they didn't sell canvas to the quality of Sunbrella.

Thanks folks,
Sunbrella was the trade name I was grasping for (memory fade, getting old).

I found a stockist on Google, ToomerandHayter.

Just need to prepare the ole wifey for a bit of sewing, a few fish suppers should do it.

thx
