advice needed, i have 220 hours on kad 32 's , marina service guys have never adjusted tappets yet, is this something i should look into , thanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Actual adjustment of the valve clearances will only be required if they are running outside of the approved tolerance, and it's quite possible they don't need adjustment.
I trust the Marina service guy did bother to check them though....
Too tight, and you run a risk of poor running and a burnt out valve, too loose and they rattle, and once again, lose power and will wear out faster.
If youi had Kad 44s or kad 300s you have to put tappet adjustment and checking above godliness but on the 32 I dont think its that critical although wise to check them as they are not too difficult to do.
It's straightforward to do them yourself - same as 4 cylinder car engine. There's stuff on this forum about it. KAD43, 44 and 300 are a very different matter - much tougher to do/reach
43's are the same basic engine as the 41's and 42's in terms of the valves and are no harder to do afaik. Its the 44's and 300's that are a real bstard.
I can't overstate that this should be done as per service schedule on Volvos especially, as others have said the K32 isn't so stressed as the 44 and 300, but it can be expensive if ignored. I will cite again the experience of MBM's own boat several years ago when they weren't checked as it involved lifting the saloon floor and the dealer couldn't be bothered, luckily MBM had the receipts to show that they had payed for this work to be done, so Volvo coughed up for two new cyl heads and major repairs and the dealer got a serious slap from VP I believe. I always check the paint around the valve cover screws to check if its been disturbed.
Its 20 mins work on the 4 cyl motors max.
Tappets are on my to do list. I'm going to ask, rather stupidly, you do take out the injectors to do this don't you? I've assumed all along that you need to be able to turn the engine over by hand.
Did my 2 x 40As a little while ago for the second time since owning the boat.
A simple job to do.Despite 600 running hours overall did not find a single tappet that really needed any worthwhile adjustment.
Was also able to reuse the old gasket both times as well, but will prob need to renew next time.
All you really need is a couple of spanners a set of feeler gauges and a half decent morning and plenty of tea.
