Hi,

Im looking at a Tankard 24.All GRP boat, Seems to be in very good condition, with GRP topside too, 12 HP inboard. With torpedo keels. Anyone know how they move in the water and how much stability I could expect on a nice day. (2-3 foot seas) Not much in to the sailing part at this time, ill motor abit at first then slowly tradition to the sails once I get more comfortable with the boat. Anyone ever have a Tankard?

That is a rare beast. Seem to remember a test in PBO when it was in production in the 1970s. Not a performance boat, but typical of the small twin keel boats of the time. Its unusual styling was its main attraction. You will find it stable and perfectly capable as a coastal cruiser as well as being able to cope with lively weather. In those days owners would not think twice about crossing the channel in similar boats.

You don't say what engine it has. This is critical as engines of that era were not the best and if it is a Petter mini twin best to walk away. A Yanmar 12 is better made but very crude and noisy by today's standards.

its a rebuilt Vire engine, petrol.

I can buy the boat for about £1,400 . The only thing I dislike is the cabin layout, much prefer the Macwester or Westerly cabin

Personally I would walk away from a Vire !

Most would, but they have their enthusiasts - Light weight, quiet, and easy to work on, I think I was told when I met someone promoting them at Beaulieu (IIRC) a few years ago. I have an idea there was an owners club, and a firm (the original manufacturers?) still making parts.

We sailed alongside a Tankard - 23' I think ? - on a broad reach F4 from Poole to Weymouth, she seemed a fine and reasonably fast vessel, on that point of sail anyway.

I later went aboard one ( long time ago but think that was a lifting keel version ) and remember being disapointed by the interior; that can be altered but my overall impression was that she's a bit of a classic ' Sailor's Boat ' if one can put a lot of work - and probably money - in.

If it has a Vire at least you get a mooring sinker with it.

Not necessarily. A good Vire is an first rate engine to have. Trouble is there are few decent ones about nowadays (unless properly recond, which involves a full strip) so they suffer the same faults as any older 2t engine. However in a Tankard i would say by todays standards thats a bit under powered, and unless the engine is in first rate condition, allow for replacing it. the Trident 24 was originally fitted with Vire 6's, and most have now been replaced by yanmar 10GM, which gives a comfortable turn of speed without taking up excessive sp[ace or weight. So £1400 isnt such a bargain, unless that engine is really good.
