Tanera Mor, Summer Islands for sale

The ownership of an estate, along with control of the homes and livelihoods of all who live there.

They are not usually run for the benefit of the inhabitants, but for the benefit of the, almost always, absentee owner and their friends.

Tenera Mor is not inhabited all year round, is it? That ad says "holiday homes". Not for nothing are they called the "Summer Isles"

Perhaps with the right management, it could be more practical for people to eke out a full time living there?

Ah but would that want to? You're on Skye with relatively good communications with the mainland, but you still have to get to Inversneckie for the A&E. When we were on Mull a couple of years ago we played "spot the Scot" due to the relatively large contingent of incomes operating the businesses on the island. My cousin said the finest thing he ever saw as a youth was the ferry carrying him off the island for good.

I look out at the Summer Isles from my front windows - a morning's gentle sail across Outer Loch Broom.
Tanera Mhor has it's own Post Office, with it's own special stamps (very collectible). It has a croft house and other houses (? don't know if they are all holiday lets).
Good, safe anchorage, plus others around the Summer Isles.

Big problem is access. From the mainland near Achiltibuie, which is a long way round from Ullapool - so whoever buys it has to be prepared to motor a lot. Or boat to Ullapool :)

Beautiful, in good weather. The whole area.

If I'd won the big Lotto I would have bought it. But I didn't, as usual.

To take up a career as a London Banker I would guess.

Many if not all leave when old enough. Many at one time would pursue careers, as ships engineer's, possible even as London bankers. Some go really far away, like Canada and rarely return. Other's who keep the old homestead return every year until they retire for good.
Fishing is dying and the MN is not what it was. It's still a breading area for ships crew, oil rig workers and other careers which do not follow the traditional 9 to 5.
Not sure what the population is there. Some estates have been bought by the local people. If there are enough left.

Summer Isles are lovely, although Tanera Mor has the issue of a fish farm dominating its main anchorage. Also the pier on the mainland side is closed because it is so tumbledown. It can be run as a successful tourist business, renting out the holiday homes and welcoming day visitors to the cafe/ post office, but I doubt it would be successful enough to pay back that sort of asking price. It is a lovely part of the world, and there is now a fairly strong community on the Coigach peninsula. It is definitely a lifestyle choice, but one that will suit some folk, even if not all the folk on here. But the price is too high.
