Discovered a few wks ago that we have a Vixen in the boat yard, which turns out she is very very tame, and will even come to eat out of your hand.
What a great feeling it is to hand feed her.

If they were scaley and had six legs but the same feeding habits would people find them so cuddly ?

I'm a country boy. My idea of being a hunt saboteur would be to go out the night before and shoot all the foxes.

Cute but in the long term her lack of fear of humans is unlikely to do her any favours. She may have been rescued at some stage and become tame while in captivity.

I may be totally wrong but I seem to remember seeing something on one of the wild life rescue prorams on TV that foxes can develop some kind brain disorder that leads to a loss of fear and that if rescued foxes show signs of this they are not released back into the wild again. (Will now be shot down in flames by a vet I expect)

We had an old and rather mangey one in the garden and roundabout that would take food from our hands a few years ago.

The funniest incident we saw was a couple of cubs who thought they would play with our cat. Normally she chases them but a couple who wanted to play was just too much for her.

I hope we don't get foxes in our boat yard as a good population of rabbits is keeping the grass cut beautifully. Rabbits, rats truly as big as pussy cats and loads of birds is what we have. Every time you move something in darts a robin for a meal and they all sing like crazy. The swallows nest in the yard shed.

A small herd of alpacas in a nearby field adds to the interest. Foxes don't go near them!

I met her too, came down the ladders backwards, turned round to see the big lambent eyes staring up at me from 3 feet away.
I expect some of the liveaboards are feeding her.
She got the remains of a bacon roll from me!

Re: Dad had a Pet Fox

I have an ancestor who spent some 20 years building up a sheep farm near Albany South West Aus around 1900. He eventually walked away with his large family from the property because the wild dogs (foxes) made the operation impossible. The foxes were imported to Aus early in the colony to provide sport now they are just a terrible menace.
On a recnt drive in the south I saw 3 dead foxes that had been hit by cars in 20 miles. They are that prolific despite poisoning shooting etc. Ironically the same farm sold recently for $2million.
So foxes in UK, how cute, but they are not universally loved by farmers.

It is the same here with kangaroos. I have a nephew who is an occasional proffessional roo shooter he can get 100 in one night for eating yet other animal lovers will spend hours trying to save an injured roo. It is all in your oerception. olewill

Re: Dad had a Pet Fox

It always strikes me as odd that the people who look after the countryside in general, those who live there and feel a closenes to the land and it's wildlife, are also the ones who willing to kill, whereas those who see the countryside as a playground, who like it in theory but couldn't stand natures reality, are the ones who are most likely to be the vegetarian militants Mr Tony B Liar listens to.

And if they happen to be a rock star with a 'sir' you can forget it. When does the open season for wrinkly ex-beatle/wings start?

Eamonn when i saw her she had sharp teeth and, tame as she is, will still bite.

No wander you're not in the water yet. Its almost midsummer you know.

Hope you're almost there now and stop getting distracted from finishing that boat
