My youngest is taking part in the Tall Ships Race and has just arrived at Brest, France from Portsmouth. She has been overwhelmed by sea sickness! Usually clears up after a couple of days but this time no way....... Any suggestions? She's tried the scopoderm patches but unfortunately experienced some of the nastier side effects. I've got her scouring the port for ginger-a challenge as shes got to deal with the translation!
The race starts on Tuesday and she is understandably concerned about the Bay of Biscay crossing to La Coruna. She's sailed on this boat before and never experienced such severe problems....help!

Domperidone Tablets, prescribed by Doctor, help my 12 year old who suffers from a weak stomach muscle. Maybe you could get hold of a Doctor in France.

Failing that there'e always Cannibis, as discussed in other threads here, but I don't expect you want to encourage thsat kind of thing.

Whatever you do try to encourage her to go on the trip. She will enjoy every minute.

Good luck

Martin

Stugeron works for me but judging by previous posts on this subject there are as many different favourite remedies as there are readers of the forum! One problem (from bitter experience) is that once the symptoms have started it is difficult to keep anything down long enough for it to be absorbed and take effect, which gives you the problem of finding something effective before setting off when you do not know what is going to be effective...

While I would not suggest mixing remedies, I am sure that ginger would be OK alongside any other chosen medicine ("gingembre" in french!).

The best thing in my experience is doses of Stugeron 24 hours, 12 hours and a few minutes before sailing. I didn't feel tired [the usual Stugerone side-effect] or the slightest twinge of seasickness in a stormy 36-hour passage in the choppy Bristol Channel. No need even to take any more doses on passage.

My daughter returned last night from 12 days on the Tall Ships - Malta to Malaga. She is a really bad traveller; threw up watching 'Perfect Storm' and is sick in the bath!

No proprietory medicine has ever worked for her so we approached our GP and asked if there was anything available on prescription. He gave her a homeopathic remedy which she took every day for 10 days before she went. Within a couple of hours of leaving Malta she says she was sick 8 times, then lost count for the next 24 hours. It was some consolation that everyone else was sick, and the Captain was quoted as being 'rather unwell'. Everyone recovered within 36 hours. I am begining to think the moral here is that time will take care of it and sea legs have to be earnt and there is no short cut.

But, she says the trip was the very best time of her life ever and had the most wonderful experience - can't wait to do it again.

Lucy has decided not to take anything for the sickness when they set sail tomorrow evening for La Coruna! I guess she will have to earn her sealegs! Hope she isn't too put off as we set sail in August towards N Africa- we're counting on her for one of the watch keepers!
She is having a great time ashore in Brest- single handed fending of the Russian navy if her phone calls are to be believed! As somebody said I'm sure this will all turn out to be the most marvellous experience. Thank you for all your suggestions!
