Tall Ships on Airisto (with video)

To follow up my previous video about the Tall Ships, here's a clip of them leaving Turku and entering Airisto, which is the first larger body of open water en route to open sea.

It was a fantastic event enjoyed by hundreds of small boats criss crossing between these magnificent ships. It took hours for all the ships to leave.

We anchored on both northern and southern end of Airisto to enjoy the sight. Weather was very co-operative apart for a fresh wind which slightly affected my drone flying, as it went well downwind but I was a bit nervous about saving enough battery to also get back.



On another note: Turku has a strong maritime history which is present everywhere, especially of course on the banks of the river Aura. There are vessels of all shapes and sizes everywhere. Not all perhaps as glamorous as the Tall Ships but still serve a practical purpose.

The ships look great coming and going!
I have stayed in Turku a few times with work, we use a machining company there.
Spent a great evening on a boat trip out to a sauna retreat, with old style hot tubs and smoke saunas, beautiful place.

The old ships really are magnificent, thankfully the countries that own these fine vessels keep them in such fine condition, a spectacular sight when underway.

Regarding your own situation K, your last few annual holiday cruises have been in the western part of Finland/Baltic Sea, have you relocated the boat to this area permanently, as in stored ashore in a shed during winter there as well, or move her back to Lappeenranta though the canal system near Vyborg?

Yes, I have a berth in Helsinki and have no immediate plans to go back to lake Saimaa. In fact, we discussed that several times over the summer and concluded that for change it's nice to enjoy the sea and the many places around the Baltic Sea. Did Estonia last year and visited Sweden this summer and we've only scratched the surface. There are dozens of nice places still to visit also on our own coast line and especially in the Archipelago Sea.

I have a great place for winter already lined up, so for now we are planning to stay on the coast, but who knows what the future holds...

I guess as the family grows you tend to get more adventurous in cruising further afield, we certainly did.
As you can tell I always enjoy the cruise reports from a fascinating part of the world, so you have my full permission to venture as far as you like, as long as you keep up the reports that is! :encouragement:

Roger that . In fact, I've been quite trigger happy with the video camera this year and have gigabytes of clips on the backlog. Most of it is for family use though, but I may spam the forum with a clip or two .
