Talkin\' to an old seadog

a group of us were nattering on about fog, radar, ais, etc..... when the old fella piped up "hmmm, electrics 'ave killed a lot of good sailors" and wandered off.

My mate announced "Oh, he used to drive thirty thousand tonners".

Makes you think!

Old tales - Radar Assisted Collisions

They were a reality when radars first appeared and unfortunatelky with the advent of more add-ons and sophistication etc. they are started to re-appear or at least potential of.

With reduction of crews etc. - the old fashioned bridge wing look-out has disapeared except in real tight situations ... I remember that my watchman was detailed of for painting or other deck work once getting a few mile of shore .... ok he had a walkie talkie - but he was not there keeping a lookout.

I know that many guys now glue to the radar screen and believe everything they see .... so its coming round again ....
