Has it got to go into hold baggage or can you take it in ones hand bag ?
and what about tools and soldering irons ?

radio probably OK but definitely no tools - I had some allen keys taken off me last summer and got chatting to the security bloke and no tools of any kind allowed quote "in case you decide to take the plane to bits"

I take radios in hand luggage without any problem but always remove the battery and aerial.

Tools of any sort are not allowed in hand luggage but are ok in hold baggage.

the best bit was to get into the package I had put the allen keys in he had to cut it open with a knife as I had taped it all up. The knife was one taken from a previous customer (dodgy rusty thing) he was called away briefly so I offered to get the packing open. However he couldn't let me use that knife as they are not allowed to give any confiscated items back to a customer. So he went and found an "airport" knife I could use - it was like a python sketch. Meanwhile the queues just got longer

Yep, +1 on both points, I've taken handheld radios through as hand baggage a couple of times recently, although I didn't bother with removing batts/aerials etc. Tools are definitely a 'no', I once had a 7mm spanner taken off me for exactly the same reason as someone else posted, in case I dismantled the plane.

Cheers

In this world there is a 'nutter' for any eventuality

At most exhibitions items are stolen from exhibits that require tools to remove.

Folks must be going prepared for such antics so it would be reasonable to assume 'nutters' would do the same thing on planes.

Sad old world.
