Hi. Im new here (first post) so sorry if it's been asked before, ive had a quick search & couldnt find similar posts.

I'm in the process of moving to Spain (Ibiza) & have just bought a second-hand 4.5m rib in the Uk which i want to take out there with me. I only intend using it for pleasure use, wakeboarding, short coastal trips etc. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the law is with regards to this, i.e.

1) paperwork required to take it there (have only hand-written receipt from previous owner)
2) paperwork / licences / permits required to use it there and where how to get it (courses involved etc)
3) any other considerations i may not have thought of, as my experience tells me there are bound to be some?

many thanks for your knowledge & time in advance /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Hello & welcome to the forum
You will need to ssr register it £12 which you can do online & you will need insurance. The Spanish will sometimes ask for an ICC which they like you to have.
Unless you are staying in a marina you will not be asked for any of these but if you incur the wrath of the Guardia or have an accident if you dont have it you will be in big trouble. use an English co for insurance its cheaper. I use Alker bros they specialise in powercraft in the med.
If you declare you are perminantly residing in Spain you will be subject to spanish law which is another kettle of fish. best to be ssr reg............Nat

Nope, right forum but you need someone with knowledge of Spanish Resedencia.

The rules for taking a boat to Spain whilst still being a UK resident differ a lot to the rules about owning a boat in Spain when you are a Spanish resident.

I am sure you would need to take a compentence test (In Spanish) and pay some kind of tax on the boat. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Someone will be along soon.

hi guys & thanks for yr time. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

ok SSR? edit, found this, online, thanks and what kind of insurance?

I have actually already started my Residencia application while i was out there (with only approx 273 more hoops to jump through, and about €350 to complete it) to be able to (legally) own & ride a spanish scooter in the summer, would you believe.

but you say it's better not to do this? not until the boat's there anyway i suppose. it wont be kept in a marina, it'll be in a large private garden, well out of sight.

and an ICC is no problem, was planning to do that anyway that's all i'd need to use it for pleasure use then?

hear u about the Guardia . .b***tards!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

..and if the rib has a trailer then it (the trailer) will need to be separately I.T.V.'ed (that M.O.T in English) and have it's own insurance.

If you insure the rib through a UK agent then you will need a copy of the insurance in Spanish.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES UPSET THESE GUYS!!!

There is a post in the last week about Matriculation Tax in Spain and there were links in it to some useful websites.

In short it all looked a bit scary - it appears that if you live in Spain you have to have it Spanish registered and you have to take a Spanish qualification (no interpreter allowed so you have to be fairly fluent in the language). This was for a 9m boat - may be diferent for a rib. All looked very complicated tho... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Right, so definitely leaving it UK registered for the moment then.

You may not have any option here if you are resident in Spain. ask RYA.

I've read something somewhere....

The fact is that many of us have different experiences with either what we have heard, or been told, or have experienced for ourselves.

I run a 110% legal charter business with a UK flagged boat in the part of Spain that I operate in. I cannot say for certain that if I moved to another province that I would still be considered "legal" in that area.
No one has yet mentioned "G5" tax. It would be a small amount for your rib. Park your UK rib in Denia for more than 6 months and it is highly likely/possible/maybe that you would have to pay. In Ibiza I have no idea. My advice - take local advice for what happens but a 4.5metre rib should not attract too much attention.

Do buy, for less tha 2 €'s, a signalling mirror; about half the size of a CD - it is mandatory that you have one of these.
BUT DO NOT UPSET THE GUARDIA!!!!!

Any further advice then consultation fees apply; or maybe you can do a fast run on your rib to Denia and get me fit!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
