Despite Chip & Pin cards working fine all last year and twice so far this week in Carrefour Hypermarket they INSISTED on a passport at the checkout this morning. I told them it wasn't necessary, that we'd been through twice this week already without needing the passport but Madame Le Jobsworth insisted. I showed her my YC photo ID and she was all smiles and said OK. We did have passports as it happened but why oh why only this store demands them (and not always) escapes me.

So if you come for the Bank Hol, take your passport to the hypermarket. We left you a couple of bottles.

Had a very interesting discussion with them too about exchanging some nifty gents underpants that were too small despite being identical to a second pack of the same, same maker, same size bought on the same receipt. Policy is 'no underwear is exchanged', I said my policy was 'no more shopping at Carrefour unles they were exchanged', it wasn't my fault, I bought the right size they just varied hugely between two packs. Eventually British strength of character prevailed and they saw the error of their ways, helped by a late arrival of a charming English speaking checkout girl who took my side!

I thought too they had already gone no smoking over here, apparently not as they were still puffing away in the restaurants!

Robin out of interest is the visitors pontoon full ? still studying the weather and not decided to go south or west yet this weekend.

Pontoon Q has some fingers missing and may not have electrics (the boxes are not lit at night). There are spaces even with some boats left apparently over winter. Pontoon P has quite a few spaces and electrics, Pontoon N has lots of spaces and electrics (fingers are too short for us at 41ft). There are lots of brand new berths in the local bit of the marina (the original) because they've extended each by some 12 fingers so maybe as many as 120 new berths created, all currently empty.

However I have NEVER not been able to get in somewhere over here.

I got caught by this in April. Passports were on boat (They didn't ask last year). We grizzled and the beer run Brits in the queue started moaning. Eventually they gave up and let me through. Sadly the bill still turned up on the Visa !

Tell us Robin, did she ring all the items through the till before reusing to let you have the goods? Next time make sure you have some frozen food in the trolly as well...

When they fist started being a PITA over needing a passport we had a trolley load of around £200's worth and I said 'take it back then' at which stage le boss was summoned and let us through. We have been through many many times since chip and pin without being asked, although once were warned to carry a passport in case their system failed, which we actually do. This time chip and pin worked fine but they still wanted a passport but even though we had them with us I showed out YC photo ID swipe card and that was good enough. I just don't understand WHY, when no other shops are easy all the way down through South Brittany or inland when we've been by car. Are the Cherbourg ferry passengers ALL considered rogues or something, but yet that must mean they change their wicked ways once out of town? Daft!
