Just seen that tacktick solar powered stuiff, what abloody good idea, for those people who dont have power on board, but want a wind instrument, cant think what you would need a solar powered compass for, don't we allready have a magnetic field driven one, that uses no power, commonly known as a magnetic compass? Unless of course its to talk to the wind instument for true wind etc, but then you would need a log aswell, oh well!

I think the latest tacckticks are wired up to do the lot. Compass, countdowns, depth, speed, log etc. They even spot headers and lifts in case you are bothered by such things while racing..

Yep, they sure do the lot now, speed etc etc.... I have had afew now since they were first introduced, all fitted on RIBS, kind of handy been local to TT. Cos our RIB was used to test alot of the early kit!

What ever they cost to actually purchase it will be one of the best bits of kit you'll ever part with your hard earned for...

Electronics, in the case of a compass on a boat, actually seem to be useful.
The display (digital - so no need to guess "its somewhere between 270 and 290") is dampened - so as the boat rolls over the waves it can show the average heading over a 1 or 2 second space (or longer if needed), rather than swinging up and down all the time.

When racing, when watching the compass all the time to ensure the best header, the display can be set to not change if the boats heading varies by less than (e.g.) 5 degrees. This way you are not distracted by small changes, but can react quickly to the larger changes in wind direction.

To do this electronically, but without batteries to replace or wires to plug in is excellent - and makes for strong, waterproof, devices that are easy to read.

No, I don't work for them. Yes, I have one....

Cheers, Chris
