I just purchased a brand new (old stock) MN30 display. I have the T120 masthead wind transducer with me at home.

Trying to set it up and pair the two components, but although it says it’s paired, there’s no sign of the wind display on the MN30.screen. I think on power up without Any data from the transducer, it should still be displaying a circular ring with graduations, properly set up it should be displaying the same thing but showing the wind speed and direction? But this isn’t displaying anything at all connected to wind, nothing, not even the circular ring with graduations.

It just doesn’t seem to believe it’s a wind instrument.

All the setup & calibration functions seem to work, the power and charging bars show the batteries ok but whatever sequence of button pushing I try, it fails to make any attempt at displaying a wind display With or without data from the transducer.

What am I doing wrong? Or is it kaput despite being new?

To clarify, the masthead transducer is original (9 years old) but the display is new. My masts being stepped next week so I need to fix this thing! It really could be a very simple “idiot operator” problem or it could be more complex. I’ve never used one of these systems so I’m unable to answer questions on previous performance etc.

TIA. Brian.

PS to add, I don’t think the problem is the battery in the transducer (but it maybe)!

Have you made sure it’s less than 300mm from mast head unit when you paired it, you have 120 seconds if I recall to do this. not so easy if the mast is up but ok for you if down

Both the mast head transducer & the MN30 are on my garden table so no problem with distance. I’m starting to wonder whether the actual wind display screen (not just the wind speed or direction data) is also transmitted from the transducer? Maybe my transducer battery is flat after all? Do you or anyone else know where the blank display screen, the one shown in all the sales pictures, comes from - I’d assumed from the MN30 display unit but maybe it comes from the transducer?

I have never seen the blank screen, mine starts up with wind circle around edge with data, txt in the middle and direction arrow spears a few seconds later , it also mn30, can you see the diagnostics screen? This will show you the signal strength to wind head

Thank goodness someone understand what I’m trying to describe! That Wind startup screen is what I don’t have and no matter what I try or which buttons I press, the display isn’t displaying! If I only knew where the initial data display screen came from - the display box (MN30) or the masthead transducer (T120) that would give me a starting point to solving the problem. Thanks for your help.

The display on the MN30 instrument should come on when the instrument is switched on by pressing the left hand button. This will bring up the initial display of the wind rose, the wind arrow will then appear if the network has a viable wind transmission, usually from the T120.
I dont have a T120 my wind data is produced by a Garmin Nexus Wind transducer to a NMEA 2000 network linked to an Actisense multiplexer and fed to a TackTick NMEA transmitter, this gives the MN 30 its signal, it sounds over complicated going from Nexus to NMEA 2000 to 0183 to Tack Tick talk but it just works and allows me to continue with the clear simple instruments that I've used for years.
Bottom line if pressing the on switch of the instrument doesn't bring up the initial display then it isn't working, easy enough to stick a PP9 battery across the terminals on the back to power it up, if it works then you have a flat battery, pretty simple to replace.
Back with an edit having thought a bit more, I have a T112 Wind Display not a MN 30 the main difference being the T112 is solar powered and has an internal battery the MN30 does not have an internal battery or solar and requires an external 12v feed! You have connected a power source to it haven't you, it wont work without one especially on the garden table......

This may be a wild card. Recently had problems after tacking off the front cover of a display head to recover a not so captive fastening nut. It is possible when locating the soft buttons for them to miss seat. Orientation is set by a corner which is clipped. Correct assembly solved the issue for me. Apparently a common happening with these heads.

Sigimae - I was trying to think of the correct description so thank you for that - compass rose! Yes, the compass rose is missing from the display when I power up. I’m powering the MN30 with a 12 volt battery and it powers up ok but says “no data”, the pages scroll through but display just dashes as you’d expect since this is the basic wind only model with no other transducers apart from wind. But the main clue is there’s no wind rose at power up , or at any other time no matter what buttons I press. I’m thinking you’re correct and the brand new MN30 has been supplied faulty - probably why it remained on the shelf unsold, it was probably originally sold and then returned as faulty and has lain as stock. That’s all I can come up with, I’ll contact the supplier tomorrow to see what he says - I haven’t contacted him before now as thought I must be something I needed to do to display the wind rose. Thanks.
