The 'Flybridge' Syten (sometimes confused with Syllen) Teleflex steering pump on my boat has just started leaking through the steering wheel shaft. Looking on the Teleflex Marine website this unit hasn't been manufactured since 1984 and parts and support are no longer available.

Annoyingly my boat was manufactured in 1989, so the boat manufacturer knowingly fitted a steering system that had ceased production 4 or 5 years earlier !!

Has anyone been able to repair the steering pump shaft from seals sourced elsewhere. I haven't started dismantling the unit yet so don't know if its a normal seal.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks, Glen

Yes I have rebuilt 2 hydraulic steering pump, not Teleflex through, by taking the old seals to my local bearing/seal supplier and getting an identical replacement.

Don't know where you are but google should help in locating a supplier.

This may help

Is the pump the teleflex 275 or the 1275 like the one in this photo

If so then I think that seals are still available I bought a set for mine in Malta and I sent the pump to Hypromarine

http://www.hypromarine.com/

They are pretty good at hydraulic systems. My pump had gradually become unresponsive and they cleaned it out and checked it over. I have yet to fit it back into the boat so perhaps I should reserve judgement on them

That is the Capilano pump and is the same as one of mine. The one problem with this pump is the front cover where the shaft seal is located is plastic and can distort with age and needs replacing. I remade the front cover in stainless steel to overcome the problem.

I do have a section drawing showing the insides some were if some one needs it.

Thanks for your help, unfortunately the pump doesn't resemble the examples you show in your post. A label with the words 'SYTEN Teleflex Canada' is attached to the pump casing and as stated in my initial post Teleflex say this unit is no longer supported.

I have sent an email to Hypromarine asking if they can help, thanks for the link.

NEVER buy bearings and/or seals from the OEM manufacturer (especially engine bits) They are usually standard sizes and can be purchased from specialist suppliers at a fraction of the price. Replacing Hydraulic seals is not difficult its just that you need to disassemble the unit to measure the sizes. Google "hydraulic seals"

I'll have to start stripping it down and have a closer look. Thanks again for the photos of steering bits, mine must be there somewhere, and good advice re OEM parts :)

I think the shaft seal on a telefax helm pump is a quadring. Similar to an O ring but it has an 'X' cross section.

I got replacements from the bearing stockist we use for my company.

To change it remove the small plastic disc retained by three screws surrounding the shaft. Fish out the old seal with a safety pin, pop in the new seal. I did this on my lower helm pump with plenty of tissue ready, and badly lost a drop.

For size just measure the shaft diameter.

Thanks for the advice, just Googled these Quad seals and they seam readily available, so I'll try and strip the unit down today or tomorrow.

Thanks again to all those people who offered advice, much appreciated :)

Just did some research and after some effort removed the Steering wheel and hub. The bad news is the Syten helm pump is a self contained unit and does not have a plate with three screws as the more modern Teleflex units have, so its not repairable. The only option is to replace the unit with a Seastar HH5271.

Thank you Birchwood and Teleflex for your continued customer support - NOT !!
