Not boaty, but maybe helpful to those who use PCs on boats.

Had a problem where couldnt get my Linksys Skype phone to recognise Skype.... the software just hung and had to be stopped by Task Manager.

Having loaded some new software over the past week or so, I restored back to June 1st without success. Spent hours searching the net, new drivers, reading forums and so on.

Eventually went back through System Restore to see if anything else had changed in the recent past, but found only System Checkpoints. Anyway.... restored back to may 1st, and it worked. No idea what changed between may1st and June 1st, but something must have.

The warning is .... if System Restore doesnt work by going back to a sensible date.... go back quite a bit further just in case. Check each restore date in between to see what has been loaded so that you know that you will have to reload it after the restore.

Hope this helps someone ..... it would have saved me about 5 hours of wasted time.

Does nothing at all ever go wrong with a Mac? Everything works together first time everytime. No corruption, etc..

Not being funny, just interested.

<<Everything works together first time everytime. No corruption, etc..>> No doubt people will tell you different stories, but I bought one as a machine for everone in the house. Nothing ever went wrong with it so I bought a laptop too. Nothing ever went wrong with that either! I've been using ibm style machines since the early 80s. Actually, until windows, nothing went wrong on those either!

Presentation or demo? Wossat? Actually my wife won't let me comment on our cars because 30 years ago I mentioned one was a good old car just before it broke down on the autobhan. No doubt if the computer was capable of leaving us five hundred miles from home with no transport she'd ban mention of those too. As for the boat...

Everything just the same can go wrong, but the frequency is less because there is less software available for them and so few people have them it's not worth creating virus attacks just for them. There are suggestions that they have bigger security holes in them than Windows. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually - they go wrong less frequently (not never) because the underlying operating system (unix) is way more robust. Now you can run a pc in a window on an intel based mac (parallels software) you're able to run progs that aren't available for macs. Add to that no viruses and full file format compatibility in MS Office and it's a no-brainer.

Patently untrue, it has been demonstrated that virus for Mac's can be created more easily and quicker than for MS - it is just that no one really bothers because the limited numbers of Mac's (compared to Windows) means that they spread very slowly and affect fewer people, so the payback for mischief makers is less.

A lot of Mac virus stories come from anti-virus s/w people. Go figure why.

As for "Do Macs ever go wrong?", yes. I had a bad disk which failed, but did so gracefully and everything was backed-up before it was replaced. Apart from that mine have never 'failed'. Current one does sometimes get 'confused', but a soft restart sorts that out. Happens maybe once a month or so. And occasionally an app will hang. Forcing it to quit, and restarting the app sorts that out. Macs look for software updates and patches semi-automatically and update themselves (you just have to enter your password to action this) so you can be pretty sure you're always running the latest version of the OS.
